Prienai Justinas Marcinkevičius Public Library: a working public library with the poet's personal collection, memorial room, and commemorative courtyard

Prienai Justinas Marcinkevičius Public Library operates at 2B Kauno Street as the principal institution in the municipality's library network. Its entrance is marked at 54.640064, 23.948207. The institution began in 1937, when one of Lithuania's new state public libraries occupied a single room in what is now a residential building at 13 Vytauto Street. The present premises were renovated in 2011, when the municipality also gave the library the name of Prienai-region poet Justinas Marcinkevičius. His memorial room opened on 28 September 2012. The library's official history does not give a construction date for the current building, so its age should not be guessed from its appearance.

The commemorative courtyard beside the library opened on 1 October 2021. Architect Vilius Adomavičius, designer Virginijus Baranauskas, and sculptor Vytautas Narutis developed the project, whose artistic feature draws on a portrait by photographer Algimantas Aleksandravičius. The courtyard is a public outdoor space used for readings and other library events in warmer weather.

The memorial room holds a personal library transferred from the poet's Vilnius home

The core collection was given to the library by the poet's wife, Genovaitė Marcinkevičienė, and was later supplemented by family members. Books, periodicals, photographs, invitations, leaflets, other ephemera, bookcases, wooden sculptures, and personal relics travelled from the Marcinkevičius home in Vilnius to Prienai. Many volumes retain authors' dedications to Marcinkevičius, making the collection evidence of both his reading and his literary relationships.

The room presented 2,454 documents when it opened in 2012. An institutional report for 2022 counted 3,022 physical items, while the library's current history page lists 3,122 unique documents. The figures come from different dates and accounting snapshots, so 3,122 is best read as the latest public total rather than a fixed measure of what is displayed at one time.

This personal library is not an ordinary lending collection. Its rules state that items cannot be taken home. Detailed consultation requires a valid reader card and registration form, while other access may require the director's permission. Slips, notes, or objects found inside the books must not be moved, and copying or photography must be agreed with staff.

Reading rooms, exhibitions, local studies, and a changing cultural programme remain part of the visit

Because this is a working public library, the experience extends beyond the memorial room. Visitors can use reading rooms, public internet, information and local-studies resources, and see changing literary or art exhibitions. Families can also ask about children's spaces and the day's activities. Exhibition, workshop, and meeting schedules change, so a past event mentioned online should not be treated as a permanent display.

The library's 2026 programmes included memorial-room presentations, sessions built around dedications, readings of the poet's work, and activities forming part of a cultural route. Groups need to book presentations, educational sessions, or a related trip to Važatkiemis separately, because these are not continuously scheduled for every walk-in visitor. Some summer reading and event activity moves into the courtyard.

Under the library rules, an unregistered visitor may use the reading rooms and attend public events or tours, and no reader card is required for public internet access. Registration becomes relevant when borrowing material or arranging close work with the poet's personal collection.

Justinas Marcinkevičius was born at Važatkiemis in the Prienai region on 10 March 1930 and died in Vilnius on 16 February 2011. He was a poet, playwright, prose writer, and translator whose work and public role are closely connected to Lithuanian culture in the second half of the twentieth century and the national revival. The library's name, memorial room, and courtyard anchor that relationship in central Prienai.

The building at 2B Kauno Street is not the house where the poet was born. Važatkiemis is the location of his birthplace and family-home memorial, while Prienai Regional Museum has a separate interactive display devoted to his writing. The library offers something different: his personal books, inscribed volumes, and objects transferred by the family, interpreted inside a functioning public library.
