A public swimming place on Mokyklos Street
Plinkšiai Recreation Area is the village swimming and leisure zone on Mokyklos Street, on the eastern shore of Lake Plinkšiai. A 2022 Mažeikiai District Municipality water-monitoring point gives the precise location of this village shore, so the map pin leads to the public beach area rather than the middle of the lake.
Do not confuse it with the State Forest Enterprise's Plinkšiai recreation area farther south or with the Plinkšiai Manor estate. These are separate visitor points beside the same lake; this page covers the village swimming place commonly labelled Plinkšiai Beach on maps.
A modest, regularly maintained shore
The recreation area consists of a grassy lawn, a sand-replenished approach to the water, benches, and other small-scale outdoor facilities. The municipality installed a children's playground here in 2024, and two curved metal loungers made by the local eldership were added in 2025. It suits a picnic, a short stop, or a quiet half-day rather than a serviced resort experience.
The Šerkšnėnai Eldership activity report records repainting benches and an information board, maintaining waste bins, adding sand, setting out buoys, and hanging life rings at the swimming place. Outdoor facilities wear and some equipment may be seasonal, so assess actual conditions when you arrive.
The scale and origin of Lake Plinkšiai
VLE gives Lake Plinkšiai an area of 393.5 hectares, a length of 5.5 km, a maximum width of 1.5 km, and a maximum depth of 11.7 m. It is a glacial-ravine lake spanning three ravine segments, with a strongly winding shoreline 14.3 km long.
The shores are mainly low and wooded, with boggy sections. The shallows are sandy, but much of the edge has a 20-60 m belt of reeds and bulrushes. The improved village swimming place offers easier access along just one section and does not represent conditions around the whole lake.
Swimming and water safety
Swim only within the marked area, remain inside the buoys, and supervise children continuously. A life ring is emergency equipment but does not mean a lifeguard is always present. The checked official sources do not state that the beach has permanent lifeguard cover, so visitors must manage their own safety.
Water quality and algal blooms can change within days. Check the latest Mažeikiai District Municipality notices before swimming, and observe signs, clarity, and smell on arrival. Stay out of the water during storms, when unwell, or if you notice pollution or accumulations of cyanobacteria.
A protected lake landscape
Lake Plinkšiai and its surroundings belong to the Plinkšiai Landscape Reserve. VLE records that the lake supports the rare and protected black tern, while open water, reedbeds, damp margins, and woodland meet around the shore.
Remain within the prepared recreation area, do not break reeds or approach birds and nesting places, and keep music quiet. Take all rubbish away, do not wash dishes in the lake, and leave no food scraps: the public beach is a gateway into a protected landscape, not a space separated from it.
Planning the visit
Choose a warm, calm day for swimming and bring drinking water, sun protection, a towel, and insect repellent. The checked sources do not list an admission charge or fixed opening hours, but daylight visits are safest and all on-site signs should be followed.
A lakeside stop combines well with Seda, Renavas Manor, or Mažeikiai Museum. Plinkšiai Manor is nearby, but access to its grounds is not the same as access to the public beach, so check the manor's visiting arrangements separately.
