From amateur operetta to a professional theatre
The municipality traces Panevėžys's musical-stage tradition to the early twentieth century. In 1913 Vladas Paulauskas composed music for The Chimney Sweep and the Miller and staged it with his choir. In 1915 audiences saw operettas by Mikas Petrauskas. Mykolas Karka and later amateur operetta groups carried the tradition forward.
The present institution was founded by a city-council decision in December 1993. A municipal history marking its 25th anniversary describes this as the transition from a long amateur tradition to professional production.
