Pagramantis Church
A church built in episcopal lands in 1774
Until 1842 Pagramantis belonged to the Kaltinėnai estate of the Bishop of Samogitia. Its owner, Bishop Jonas Dominykas Lopacinskas, built the wooden church in 1774; in 1780, at the residents' request, Bishop Steponas Jonas Giedraitis endowed it. Bishop Tadas Juozapas Bukota consecrated the renewed sanctuary.
The parish was established in the late 18th century, with Father Radvilavičius regarded as its first pastor and founder. A rectory house, barn, and semi-basement appeared nearby in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, making the church the centre of a broader parish estate.
Samogitian timber architecture
The wooden church has a symmetrical Latin-cross plan and one tower. Its simple but expressive silhouette belongs to late-18th-century Samogitian sacred architecture: a steep roof and vertical tower axis balance a low, broad timber volume.
Three simple masonry chapels stand in the churchyard. Their original statues disappeared between 1966 and 1973, while the chapels were restored in 1990. Three wooden wayside shrines with sculptures, recognised as art heritage even in the Soviet period, also survive.
The main altar and rare personified virtues
Three timber altars, an altar rail, pulpit, pews, confessionals, and an organ furnish the interior. The main altar's first level carries late-18th-century statues of apostles Peter and Paul; above them stand the uncommon Samogitian representations of Fortitude and Justice.
An image of the Virgin reflects the church's dedication, with a relief of St Casimir above it. Late-18th-century paintings of St Martin and St George, possibly St Longinus, survive on the side altars. Two 18th-century chasubles are preserved, one made from specially woven Slutsk sashes.
Services and respectful visiting
On 21 July 2026 the Diocese of Telšiai listed Sunday Mass at 11:30 and weekday or Saturday services by arrangement. Adoration was listed at 11:00 on the first Sunday of the month. Times can change for feasts, funerals, and liturgical seasons, so recheck the official parish page.
This is a working place of worship, not a museum with permanent hours. Do not arrive late solely to photograph, silence devices, and never photograph worshippers or rites without permission. There is no admission charge; any parish donation is voluntary.
