A short route through Sausašilis Forest's wet ground
Kukuižė Lake Nature Trail is in Sausašilis Forest in Visaginas Municipality, beside Kosmoso Street. The coordinate 55.597155, 26.410302 marks the nature trail itself, not a guaranteed car park or the starting point of the future long-distance connection.
The municipal forest-management plan describes a wooden trail of about 180 metres crossing wet woodland to boggy Lake Kukuižė. In 2023 the municipality reported that the boardwalk had been extended by about 50 metres to the left and that an additional rest area with loungers had been installed. Because sources describe infrastructure from different years, follow the current end of the path rather than chasing one fixed number.
This is a short stop whose value is not measured in kilometres. Walking slowly reveals the transition from drier pine-forest ground to a damp peat hollow, while the boardwalk avoids the wettest surface.
Raised-bog plants grow among pine trees and water
Visaginas Municipality notes Labrador tea, heather, bog bilberry, and cranberries in the wet pine forest around Lake Kukuižė. These plants belong to the acidic, damp, nutrient-poor edge of a raised bog, so their habitat looks different from the drier forest floor.
A wetland landscape should not be read as nothing but mud. Sphagnum hummocks, low shrubs, pools, and twisted pine trunks form a fine mosaic that can be observed from the boardwalk without stepping into the vegetation. Do not pick plants or collect cranberries as a reason for leaving the path.
Sausašilis-Tumiškės is a large lake-rich forest complex with wetlands, so Kukuižė Trail is one small window into it. Beyond the boardwalk, ground and access can change completely; the trail is not permission to cross wet forest areas independently.
The trail is for watching life, not only reaching the lake
The municipal visitor-place description says the raised bog contains insects, amphibians, and reptiles, and that groups of cranes may be seen at the right time. This is not a guaranteed programme: wildlife depends on season, time of day, water level, and visitor behaviour.
Quiet walking reveals more than loud conversation or music. Pause at the edge of the boardwalk, do not feed birds, and do not leave the route to look for nests. Cranes and other wetland residents may leave before you notice them.
An information board and benches appear in the municipal forest plan, while the improvement notice mentions an additional rest area with loungers. Small timber facilities weather outdoors, so judge their current condition on site and follow any maintenance signs.
The improved boardwalk is due to be extended again
Municipal notices from 2021 to 2023 show that the timber surface beside Lake Kukuižė was repaired and extended. This matters when reading older descriptions: the previous condition or length may not match what visitors find today.
In January 2026 the municipality announced a broader project: the existing boardwalk is to be extended and connected to the rest area by the tennis courts and the shore of Lake Visaginas, while the route towards Gražutė Regional Park is to be modernised. Project activity is scheduled to finish on 31 October 2028, so planned links must not be presented as a completed continuous route.
Boards can be wet, mossy, or uneven, and the approach from the trailhead may include natural forest ground. No continuous universal-design route is officially described, so the trail should not automatically be called fully suitable for wheelchair users or pushchairs.
The official sources publish no opening hours or separate ticket. Daylight visits remain safest, and after a storm visitors should check for fallen branches and avoid any closed, repaired, or damaged boardwalk section.
Arriving and extending the walk
The city's visitor-place page gives Sausašilis Forest and Kosmoso Street as the location. Save the coordinates before driving because a small woodland site may not have large road signs. No current official parking plan is published, so leave a vehicle only in a lawful place, never on the forest path, and never where it blocks access.
About 30-60 minutes is usually enough for the boardwalk and a pause beside the lake. If you want to continue, first identify where the maintained route ends and choose only lawful, clearly visible forest roads. Lake Kukuižė is not a promise that the whole shoreline can be walked safely.
Kukuižė Trail combines naturally with Visaginas and Lake Visaginas. A single day can then contain three different scales: a short wetland boardwalk, a city in pine forest, and a larger lake with a developed shore.
