Kristijonas Donelaitis Square in Klaipėda: a tree-lined New Town square centred on Petras Deltuva's monument

From Linden Garden to a city square

The site began to change in the first half of the nineteenth century as the expanding New Town grew beyond Klaipėda's older core. Krašto gidas says that the future square first appeared on an 1821 map. The area still carried traces of the former Krūmamiestis cemetery, scattered trees, and a military earthwork locally called a šansas.

Plans from 1839-1840 show trees lining three sides and name the space the Municipal Linden Square. From 1857 to 1868 it served school gymnastics and was known as Turnplatz. A park and promenade function later returned; in the early twentieth century it included sports and flower areas, while in 1939 a relocated monument to Emperor Wilhelm I briefly occupied its western side.

The 1973 monument to Donelaitis

The square's present identity comes from the monument to Kristijonas Donelaitis unveiled on 29 December 1973. VLE identifies Petras Deltuva as the sculptor and Petras Šadauskas as the architect. The tall red-granite work is not a conventional bust set separately on a pedestal: portrait and vertical support read as a single restrained form.

The square itself was redesigned when the monument was installed. Concrete slabs were laid, benches added, and planting renewed according to Šadauskas's design. The sculpture therefore became the dominant element of the whole space rather than an isolated object. Since the late 1980s, Klaipėda residents have gathered here on 1 January to honour Donelaitis on his birthday.

Why Klaipėda commemorates the poet of Tolminkiemis

Kristijonas Donelaitis was born in Lazdynėliai in 1714 and served as the Evangelical Lutheran pastor of Tolminkiemis from 1743 until his death. VLE calls him the founder of Lithuanian imaginative literature and dates his poem The Seasons to approximately 1760-1775. Martynas Liudvikas Rėza first published the cycle in 1818.

The Klaipėda square is not a place where Donelaitis lived, his museum, or the church at Tolminkiemis. It is a twentieth-century memorial site that deliberately connects Klaipėda with the Lithuanian literary tradition of Lithuania Minor. Visitors should therefore distinguish the poet's biographical sites in today's Kaliningrad Region from his later commemoration in this port city.

A ring of trees within the architecture of New Town

The mature deciduous trees are not incidental decoration. Trees have framed the square since the nineteenth century, and its ring of lindens long connected it with the boulevard character of Liepų Street. Today the canopy softens traffic noise, casts shade, and frames the vertical granite monument; the relationship is clearest when approaching along the main paths.

Buildings from several periods of New Town define the edges. A group of three cooperative apartment houses from the early twentieth century survives to the north, while later residential and cultural buildings occupy other sides. The Neo-Gothic Central Post Office, the Clock Museum, and other Liepų Street landmarks are only a few minutes away.

Visiting and the planned renewal

This is an open public city space with no admission ticket or museum opening hours. Allow 20-40 minutes for a short circuit around the monument. Walking here from the Central Post Office along Liepų Street is straightforward, but nearby parking spaces do not constitute a dedicated visitor car park for the square.

On 23 June 2026, Klaipėda City Municipality announced a contractor tender for renewal of the square. The project proposes retaining all 61 trees, laying five paths toward the monument, and improving universal access, lighting, and seating. A tender announcement is not a completion date, so check municipal updates before a special journey and obey temporary barriers on site.
