Kaunas Picture Gallery: an art branch opened in 1979
Kaunas Picture Gallery operates at K. Donelaičio g. 16, close to other important cultural sites in the city. It opened in 1979 according to a design by architects Liucija Gedgaudienė and Jonas Navakas and is a branch of the National M. K. Čiurlionis Museum of Art. It is not simply another museum hall: here Kaunas art history meets changing contemporary exhibitions.
Visitors should know that the gallery experience depends on the exhibitions open at the time. On one visit you may find projects by Lithuanian and foreign artists and the community platform Mažosios istorijos (Little Stories); on another, a contemporary-art show or an exhibition analysing the city.
Jurgis Mačiūnas Fluxus Cabinet
Kaunas Picture Gallery is often mentioned for its Jurgis Mačiūnas Fluxus Cabinet. It displays works by J. Mačiūnas, Jonas Mekas, Joseph Beuys, Mieko Shiomi, Ben Vautier, George Brecht, and other participants in the Fluxus movement: unconventional books, mail-art examples, prints, and objects. Works dedicated to the movement by Lithuanian authors, including the Post-Ars group and Kęstutis Grigaliūnas, are shown nearby.
Cabinet highlights include Ay-O's installation Black Hole and Takako Saito's installation Manomano Theatre. This layer is especially important for Kaunas because Fluxus lets the city be seen not only through interwar architecture, but also through experimental, international, conceptual culture. If you are visiting for Fluxus, check in advance which exhibitions are open.
Who will enjoy this gallery most
The gallery is especially good for visitors who have already seen the main Kaunas sights and want a more contemporary layer of the city. It is convenient in rain, between architecture walks, or when you want slower museum time without heavy tourist flow.
With children, choose according to the specific exhibition. Some shows may be highly visual, while others are more text-based or conceptual, so it is useful to review the official events and exhibitions page before visiting.
Practical visiting
At the time of research, the official page listed the usual schedule as Tuesday-Friday 11:00-19:00 and Saturday-Sunday 11:00-17:00. Opening hours, tickets, exhibition closing dates, and hall accessibility can change, so check official information before going.
Kaunas Picture Gallery usually takes 1-2 hours. If you combine it with the Čiurlionis Museum, Devils' Museum, and Vienybės Square, plan half a day.
