KMN
A changing programme, not a conventional museum
Kaunas Artists' House has no single permanent exhibition to tick off at any hour. Its content is the calendar: contemporary-art exhibitions, performance, experimental music, film, urban-culture projects, residencies, poetry slams, and creative workshops.
Choose a specific event and check its location because some KMN programmes happen elsewhere in the city. When an activity is in the house, arrive early enough to notice how its compact rooms, terrace, and amphitheatre establish a community scale.
Free reading room and MATTERS sound shelf
The free reading room welcomes individual work, small meetings, and reading. Its collection includes cultural theory, criticism, art history, journals, exhibition catalogues, artist monographs, and artist's books, including material absent from conventional public libraries.
The MATTERS media library is distinctive: cassettes, vinyl, CDs, and texts on experimental music, drone, noise, listening, and sound politics. Players and headphones are available on site. Publications can be borrowed after following registration rules.
Five decades as an artists' meeting place
KMN marked its 50th anniversary in 2021, making it one of Lithuania's longest-running cultural institutions of its kind. Its modernist building matters not only as a façade, but as a continuously used place for artists and public culture.
The façade, terrace, stairs, and valuable details were restored in 2021-2022, with lighting, wooden windows, and doors renewed. The historical colour and Vytautas Banys's Muses stained glass were preserved. View it from street and garden because the green slope changes its apparent scale.
Hours and visitor etiquette
On 21 July 2026, KMN listed Monday-Thursday hours of 10:00-18:00 and Friday 10:00-17:00; individual events and Saturday reading-room hours may differ. Many reading-room services are free, while tickets or registration appear on each event page.
The address is 56-1 V. Putvinskio Street. Pets are welcome in the reading room, although events may set separate rules. Allow 30-60 minutes for architecture and reading room, longer for an exhibition, listening session, or discussion.
