Kalviai Lake beside Kalviai village
Kalviai Lake lies in Kalviai village, in Kaišiadorys District Municipality, about 5 km south of Kruonis. VLE provides its morphology and its connection with the Lapainia, while the municipal overview rounds the lake's area to 180 hectares.
This page covers the entire water body, not only the separate Kalviai Beach listing. The coordinate here marks the visitor approach and swim start described in a public local visitor account, so it is not the lake's geographic centre.
A 180.8-hectare lake with contrasting shores
VLE gives an area of 180.8 hectares, a west-to-east length of about 3 km, and a maximum width of 1.3 km. The surface lies at 88.2 m, maximum depth is 7 m, average depth is 4 m, and the catchment covers 58.4 sq km.
Most shores are steep, while the western end is shallower and marshy. The same lake therefore combines an open recreational shore with reed beds and softer natural habitats; do not try to reach those areas by unmarked routes.
The Lapainia flows through the lake
The Lapainia flows through Kalviai Lake, which VLE places in the Nemunas Middle Basin. Its reported 162% throughflow shows that water is continually renewed through the outlet system; this is not a closed basin.
That hydrological detail matters beyond the map. Water level, current, and shore conditions can differ around the lake, so use the managed beach area for swimming rather than choosing an arbitrary corner of the shoreline.
A public beach beside Kalviai Church
A public local visitor description presents Kalviai Beach as a maintained recreation area with a sandy shore, a shelter, and sports spaces. Check the current condition of the pier, courts, toilets, and other amenities before travelling because seasonal infrastructure changes.
The beach is a useful starting point for a short visit: walk along the shore, watch the reeds and quiet water, and swim in the designated area during the warm season. The beach is not a synonym for the whole lake.
The lake is complemented by the Kalviai rotunda landscape
Near the lake stands St Anthony of Padua Church in Kalviai, a rare Neoclassical rotunda with a dome and an open belfry. The combination of water and the round sanctuary gives this place a clear cultural-landscape character, so a visit does not need to be only about swimming.
The church is an active religious space, not a museum that is permanently open. Check Mass times and interior access separately; continue from the beach using local directions and do not cross private property.
Swimming and responsible visiting
Local visitor descriptions present Kalviai Beach as a summer recreation place, and the Hygiene Institute's 2026 schedule includes Kalviai Lake among planned sampling locations. A schedule is not a continuously valid water-quality result, so follow the latest signs, warnings, and conditions displayed at the beach on the day of your visit.
Do not dive from the pier, keep children within reach in deeper water, stay inside the marked bathing area, and do not bring motorised craft into a prohibited zone. Leave reed beds and steep natural shores undisturbed, and take rubbish home.
