Girkalnis Church, Girkalnis Church of St George
Curved white volumes identify the present church
The church at 2 Žemaičių Street is not the former wooden sanctuary. Its white curved walls, angular grey roof planes, and tall square tower with a dark pointed spire make the present building immediately legible in Girkalnis's low rural skyline.
The church has a round plan, a prominent St George altar, and a Dutch-made organ. These belong to an active worship space, so visitors can see them only when the parish opens the building and no ceremony is being disturbed.
The 1997 sanctuary continues a much older parish story
A wooden church was built in Girkalnis in 1744 and replaced by another wooden sanctuary in 1898. That building burned in 1944, after which the community used temporary worship spaces for decades before the present project became possible.
Construction of architect Feliksas Sakalauskas's church began in 1990, the foundations were blessed in 1991, and the sanctuary was consecrated on 28 September 1997. A 1964 date is also sometimes given, but the present building began in 1990 and was consecrated in 1997.
Girkalnis Church opening and Mass times
Mass is held at 11:00 on Sunday, 10:00 on Saturday, and 08:00 on weekdays. These arrangements can change, so check the current schedule and weekend opening information before travelling specifically to see the interior.
This is an active parish rather than a permanently open museum. Speak quietly, do not photograph worshippers without permission, and contact the parish in advance about a group visit, interior photography, or access at another time.
