Gela Beach I, Gelo Beach, Gela Lake white beach
Gela Beach is framed by forest and lake
Gela Beach lies near Nemenčinė, in the area of Tusčiaustai village. The official Vilnius Region Tourism Information Centre describes it as a free natural spa where visitors can walk, swim, or fish. A small pier is listed at the site, and pine forest frames the shore.
This entry covers the main visitor beach, also called Gela Beach I on maps. A second beach is nearby, so check that navigation has selected the main sandy bathing point rather than another section of shore or the separate resort property.
Beach facilities, water testing, and lifeguard services can change with the season. Check Vilnius District Municipality notices before travelling, follow on-site signs, and never judge swimming safety from the water's colour or clarity alone.
The white clay is actually lake chalk
Gela's shore has a loose white layer that visitors often call white clay. Research by the Lithuanian Geological Survey explains that it is not true clay or kaolin. It is freshwater limestone, also called lake chalk, a porous sedimentary rock formed from compounds released in lake water, mainly calcium carbonate.
The white sediment does not cover every part of Gela's shore. Ordinary sand dominates the main bathing area, while the paler section is a separate natural feature. Do not label the whole beach as clay or infer the lake's chemistry from the colour of one shore.
The chalk is not a cosmetic or medical treatment. Do not rub it on your skin for supposed health benefits, put it in your mouth, or remove it from the natural bank. Its value here is the geological phenomenon itself.
What is at the site and how to behave by the water
The official description lists a pier, a natural shore, and the possibility of swimming and fishing. Visitor descriptions portray the main beach as a broader sandy shore, but facilities and cleanliness can change, so do not plan the visit as if this were a fully serviced city beach.
Do not jump from the pier. Water depth and the lake bed look different from above, and an older photograph cannot guarantee the present condition of a structure. Keep children within reach, stay near shore, and leave the water during storms or strong wind.
White sediment and sand can be slippery after rain. Use existing paths, do not park on the forest floor, do not light fires outside a designated place, and take rubbish with you. Gela's appeal depends on its natural shore, so visiting should not damage it.
Swimming, fishing, and the limits of water-quality claims
The Vilnius District Municipality has published information about parasitological testing of beach sand at Gela: in a 2022 test, Gela's sand met hygiene-standard requirements. That is a result from a particular test, not a permanent guarantee, so check current local notices and signs before swimming.
The tourism centre describes Gela Lake as one of the cleanest around Vilnius, but that description does not replace official water testing for a particular day. Do not enter after heavy rain or when you see algae, pollution, or a prohibition sign.
The official site description lists fishing as a possible activity, but national recreational-fishing rules and seasonal limits still apply. Check the current requirements before travelling, and do not clean catches on the beach sand or pier.
How to arrive and how long to stay
The official description gives Tusčiaustai village and Nemenčinė eldership. Search for Gela Beach rather than only the lake name; this entry's visitor point is 54.848621, 25.503319. The road from Nemenčinė is short, but the final approach and parking depend on the season and local signs.
One to two hours is enough for a short swim, while swimming, a walk, quiet rest, and fishing equipment justify 2-4 hours. Arrive early on a hot weekend, bring drinking water, and do not assume that shops or every visitor service will be available.
Gela Beach can be combined with natural and cultural places around Nemenčinė, but follow the rules for the particular shore. This is a natural public recreation place, where leaving quietly and respecting the white lake chalk matter more than a quick photograph.
