Birštonas Resort Hall
What is a kurhaus?
The German-derived word Kurhaus denotes a resort's leisure and social house, combining a concert or dance hall with a buffet. It was not a treatment building but a social centre where guests met, listened to music, and spent their evenings.
Birštonas's resort hall is documented from 1855. Concerts were recorded in 1860, and in July 1879 the future internationally celebrated pianist Ignacy Jan Paderewski performed here.
A long site history, not one unchanged building
It is important not to call today's Kurhaus an unaltered 1855 building. The first structure suffered during the First World War, was repaired, and was eventually demolished; a new Kurhaus was begun in 1931 from a design associated with engineer Romanas Steikūnas.
A fire devastated the building in 1944 near the end of the Second World War. The interior and Kazys Šimonis's celebrated panels were lost. The Kurhaus was rebuilt around 1960 in a changed, composite form.
Interwar leisure and dietary dining
Between the wars, the Kurhaus had a concert hall and an outdoor terrace with tables under umbrellas. It offered a representative but restrained resort setting integrated with Vytautas Park and the treatment establishments.
At resort director Balys Matulionis's initiative, one of Lithuania's earliest dietary catering establishments operated here. The detail shows how leisure in Birštonas was tied to treatment and health regimes.
Revival and visiting today
The Kurhaus entered the architectural heritage list in 2006 and reopened after reconstruction on 6 June 2013. It now contains a concert hall and hosts conferences, art exhibitions, and cultural events.
Its exterior can be viewed freely while walking in Vytautas Park, but everyday interior access is not guaranteed. To see the hall, choose a public event and check the Birštonas Culture Centre programme and ticket information in advance.
