Birštonas Observation Tower on Škėvonys Ridge

Birštonas Observation Tower is officially called the Nemunas Loops / Birštonas Observation Tower. It stands on Škėvonys Ridge, about 92 m above sea level, so the site already gives a sense of height before you begin climbing.

Saugoma.lt states that the tower is about 240 m from the Nemunas. It is therefore not simply a riverside structure: it opens a wider landscape of valley, forest, and the Birštonas resort. VLE notes that Škėvonys Ridge is the only formation of its kind in Lithuania, making the site not only a good viewpoint but also a geologically distinctive point.

Tower height: 51 m structure and 45 m platform

Saugoma.lt gives the key figures: the total tower height is 51 m, and the viewing platform is set at 45 m. Because of this scale, the tower is rightly listed among Lithuania's highest observation towers.

The wording matters: 51 m is the full structure height, while the visitor experience happens at the 45 m platform. The height of Škėvonys Ridge itself adds to that feeling.

What you can see from the top

From the tower you see the landscape of Nemunas Loops Regional Park: the Nemunas valley, Birštonas resort, forests, more open meadows, and bends of the river. On a clear day it is easy to understand that the Nemunas does not simply pass Birštonas; it shapes the whole landscape.

For a first visit to Birštonas, the tower helps you orient yourself: where the resort centre lies, where the river valley continues, and where forests give way to open spaces. VLE states that Nemunas Loops Regional Park, where the tower stands, was established in 1992, covers 25,079.76 ha, and protects the Great Nemunas Loops system - Punia, Balbieriškis, Prienai, and Birštonas - with 25 hillforts, including Punia Hillfort.

Architectural motif

The tower's architecture uses motifs associated with traditional Lithuanian wooden architecture: cross-crafting, chapel-posts, belfries, and castle towers. With vertical wooden elements and small openings, it reads more like a landscape sign than a plain metal stair tower.

This design matters visually: the tower is visible from a distance, yet its wooden cladding and vertical form keep it from feeling wholly alien to the Nemunas Loops scenery.

The tower and Škėvonys Exposure

The nearby Škėvonys Exposure and Škėvonys Ridge educational trail explain the same landscape from another angle. The tower gives the panorama; the exposure shows how glacial layers and Nemunas erosion shaped this relief.

If you have time, combine the two. The experience is much stronger than climbing the tower, taking a photograph, and leaving.

How to visit

Allow at least 45 minutes for the tower, and more if you also walk the Škėvonys trail. Climb without rushing, especially if you are uncomfortable with heights or visiting on a windy day. Wind at the top can be much stronger than below.

For the best view, choose a clear day. Morning or evening light works well for photographing the Nemunas valley because river and forest contrasts are softer.
