Traditional Crafts Centre in Biliūnai, Juozapas Liekis Machinery Museum
Juozapas Liekis's collection, from engines to domestic objects
The centre grew from collector Juozapas Liekis's long-assembled nineteenth- and twentieth-century technical and ethnographic collection. Agricultural machines, stationary engines, vehicles, motorcycles, carts, craft tools, and household objects share the site.
That breadth is meaningful. A rural economy was a connected system: an engine drove equipment, a craftsperson repaired it, a cart moved produce, and flax and wool became cloth at home. Look for those relationships rather than only the largest tractor.
Operational machinery, not only silent exhibits
Some machines have been restored to working condition. Motion and sound explain shafts, belts, and transmission more clearly than a static object can.
Demonstrations depend on the programme, staff, and safe conditions. Do not operate equipment independently; ask in advance if a particular demonstration is available.
Weaving, flax, and the memory of skill
Looms and tools for spinning and processing flax complement the machines. They show the route from plant or fibre to everyday cloth and the knowledge once passed through families and communities.
Educational sessions can make the visit practical. Themes, ages, group requirements, and booking conditions change, so choose a current programme on the museum's official site.
Hours and preparing for the visit
On 22 July 2026, published hours were Tuesday-Saturday 9:00-18:00, with a 12:00-13:00 lunch break. Since parts of the collection occupy outdoor and utilitarian spaces, dry weather and closed comfortable footwear help.
Hours, admission, demonstrations, and educational schedules can change. Confirm them officially and arrange group visits ahead.
