KADS Baroti Gallery, Baroti galerija
One of Klaipėda's longest-running independent galleries
Baroti Gallery opened on 1 June 1992 and began as one of the first private galleries in Klaipėda and Lithuania. Its status changed in 1997, when the newly established Klaipėda County Artists' Union became the gallery's founder, but the already recognisable Baroti name was retained.
The gallery's beginnings are linked with ceramicist and painter Isroildžon Baroti, while Andželika Baroti became its director. Over time, the name came to stand not only for the artist's surname but for a consistent contemporary-art platform in Klaipėda.
Changing exhibitions, art sales, and cultural projects
Baroti is not a museum with a permanent historical display. Exhibitions of painting, graphic art, sculpture, ceramics, photography, and interdisciplinary work by Lithuanian and international artists change regularly, so two visits may feel completely different. The official archive shows a busy programme ranging from recognised modern classics to artists working today.
The gallery also sells and rents artworks, advises on forming contemporary-art collections, publishes art albums, and organizes cultural events and projects. It combines a commercial gallery with a city cultural hub rather than operating as a neutral exhibition hall alone.
A half-timbered warehouse as the gallery's landmark
The gallery is easy to recognise by its tall, narrow half-timbered facade: dark wooden framing divides white panels, wooden shutters cover the windows, and a greenish base meets a dark contemporary entrance volume. Visitor descriptions identify the building as a former fish warehouse dating from 1819.
Architectural sources date the wider Aukštoji Street warehouse group to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and emphasize the importance of half-timbered and brick warehouses to Klaipėda Old Town. In 2019 the municipality was completing the restoration of a four-building half-timbered complex and named Baroti Gallery among its users. The building is therefore more than an exhibition backdrop: it is evidence of the port city's warehouse architecture.
How not to confuse Baroti with KCCC or the history museum
Baroti's contact page uses the combined address Didžioji Vandens g. 2 / Aukštoji g. 1. The KCCC Exhibition Hall operates in the same Old Town cultural area, but it is a separate institution with its own halls, tickets, events, and hours. Look for Baroti's half-timbered building and gallery entrance.
The History Museum of Lithuania Minor is another separate institution that also lists Didžioji Vandens g. 2. The museum occupies a Baroque residential house built in 1773-1774 and tells the region's history; Baroti is a contemporary-art gallery in part of the half-timbered warehouse complex. Shared or overlapping street numbering does not make them one exhibition.
Opening hours and planning a visit
On 24 July 2026, the official contact page listed the gallery as open Tuesday-Friday 11:00-14:00 and 15:00-18:00, Saturday 11:00-16:00, and closed Sunday and Monday. There is a break between 14:00 and 15:00. Access may differ while exhibitions are being changed or before an opening, so check the gallery website or contact it before travelling.
Allow 30-60 minutes for a typical exhibition. The official website does not state a permanent general ticket price, so do not assume that admission is always free; ask the gallery about the specific show or event.
