A wine tradition since 1926
Anykščių vynas is one of Lithuania's best-known producers of fruit and berry wine. VLE states that the winery has operated in Anykščiai since 1926, when agronomist Balys Karazija began making apple wine, and from 1927 berry wine as well. Over the decades, the company became the largest wine producer in the Baltic states.
Because of this long tradition, Anykščiai is often called Lithuania's wine capital. The winery lived through different periods: interwar success, Soviet-era changes, and privatization, but it has preserved the name of Anykščiai winemaking to the present day.
Production and products
Anykščių vynas is known for fruit and berry wines; its products include wine, cider, and apple juice. VLE notes that the company processes large quantities of fruit and berries, and that its products are exported abroad. This is not grape-wine culture, but a winemaking tradition adapted to Lithuanian raw materials.
The company's history reflects the wider twentieth-century development of the Lithuanian economy: from a private interwar business to a state factory and back to a private company. Today the winery is part of a larger beverage-production group, while retaining the historic Anykščių vynas name.
Visitor programme and tasting
Anykščių vynas has a visitor centre offering an interpretive programme with a look at production, Lithuanian beverage history, and a tasting. It is a popular leisure tour that shows how Lithuanian fruit and berries become wine and cider.
The programme lasts about 2-2.5 hours and must be booked in advance. Because alcoholic drinks are tasted, it is for adults only. Anykščių vynas is also one stop on a Lithuanian beverage route linking several factories in the country.
How to visit
The winery and visitor centre are in Anykščiai town, on Dariaus ir Girėno Street. The tour must be booked in advance by phone or through a registration form; separate conditions apply for groups.
