Which St Joseph Church Stands in Pilaitė
This page covers the new St Joseph Church at 4 Tolminkiemio Street in Pilaitė. It is the large, steep-roofed building on the eastern side of the parish site, not the small St Joseph chapel built beside it in 2001. The chapel and new church have separate Google Maps listings and different place IDs.
Nor should the Pilaitė church be confused with the Baroque Church of St Joseph the Betrothed that once stood in Vilnius Old Town and was demolished in 1877. The present Pilaitė church is a twenty-first-century building belonging to an active parish of the Archdiocese of Vilnius.
From the 1999 Parish to Mass in the New Church
Archbishop Audrys Juozas Bačkis founded Pilaitė St Joseph Parish on 17 February 1999. Its first Lithuanian- and Polish-language services were held in the hall of Martynas Mažvydas School. A temporary chapel and parish house, built in about six months, were blessed on 8 September 2001.
After Ričardas Doveika became parish priest in 2014, he began mobilising support for the new church. Archbishop Gintaras Grušas blessed its cornerstone on 19 March 2016, work on site began in spring 2017, and Christmas services that year were already held beneath the completed roof. Sunday Mass has been celebrated regularly in the new church since spring 2020.
Architecture and Evidence of Ongoing Fit-Out
The parish credits Marius Pranas Šaliamoras, Kęstutis Akelaitis, and Gintaras Čaikauskas as the project's architects; the official 2016 Lithuanian architecture catalogue also names Viktorija Venckūnienė on the team. The restrained composition combines a steep-gabled main volume, cross-plan side projections forming four chapel niches, and a single vertical tower integrated into the building. The project description associates its vertical proportions with an impression of upward movement, but does not assign invented St Joseph symbolism to individual forms.
The current exterior shows pale profiled-metal roofing, a long narrow rooflight band, exposed concrete, and an open metal crown carrying the tower's slender spire and cross. An altar and two ambos were installed in 2022; in 2023 the interior walls were plastered and levelled with clay plaster, and floor work was being prepared. After those entries, the public construction log still lists facade ceramics, floors, building services, windows, doors, a lift, lighting, and safety systems as future work. On 15 July 2026, the official website continued to solicit support for construction, and no record of formal completion or consecration could be found.
St Joseph Dedication and a Bilingual Parish Community
The church and parish are dedicated to St Joseph. The cornerstone was blessed on 19 March, the saint's solemnity in the Catholic liturgical calendar, although the official architectural account does not link the building's forms to specific attributes of its patron.
From its first services, the parish has served Lithuanian- and Polish-speaking Pilaitė residents. Its history records Caritas work, catechesis for children and young people, family groups, choirs, fairs, and pilgrimages. The new church is therefore both an architectural work and a liturgical and community space for a rapidly expanded district of western Vilnius.
