Siberijos Tower: 15 m viewpoint on Cidabras Hill

Siberijos Observation Tower is one of the shortest but most useful stops in Žemaitija National Park. It is not for a long hike or complex exhibition; its value is the panorama, which quickly explains the Plateliai and Beržoras landscape.

According to VLE and Saugoma.lt, the tower is 15 m high and stands on Cidabras, or Būgnas, Hill, 165.7 m above sea level. The hill location already lifts the viewpoint above the trees, so the tower is enough to open the relationship between lakes, bog, village, and forest. The tower stands in one of Lithuania's largest protected natural complexes, 21,754 ha, established in 1991.

What you can see from Siberijos Tower

From Siberijos Observation Tower you can see Lakes Plateliai and Beržoras, Siberijos bog, Beržoras village, the southern part of Plateliai town, and Liepijai Forest. These are the key landmarks named by Saugoma.lt.

The panorama is valuable because it gathers several Žemaitija National Park types into one view: lakes, bog, village, and forest. On a map they may look like separate points, but from the tower it is clear how they form one landscape shaped by the glacier.

Siberijos bog and the place name

The tower name is connected with nearby Siberijos bog, considered one of the most valuable bogs in Žemaitija National Park and protected as a telmological, or bog, reserve. To visitors the name may sound unexpected, but such place names preserve local microhistory and landscape memory.

The bog is not just an empty lowland. It matters ecologically, since many of the park's rare plants grow in bogs, and it also shapes the tower view: the mosaic of water, peatland, meadow, and forest gives the panorama more structure than a lake alone behind trees.

How to visit

Siberijos Observation Tower usually needs 20-45 minutes. Visit on a clear day, when visibility lets you identify the lakes and village directions. After rain, stairs or approaches may be slippery, so wear comfortable footwear.

The tower works well as a short stop between Plateliai, Beržoras, Paplatelė Trail, and the Cold War Museum. With children, it is a convenient place to explain briefly what the national park looks like from above.

When the view is best

Morning and evening give softer light, while clear weather lets you see farther. In summer the panorama is green and dense; in autumn forest colours stand out; in spring water and bog areas are easier to see.

Strong wind is felt more on the tower than below, so even on a warm day a light jacket is useful. In winter the place can be beautiful, but take care with slippery stairs and approaches.

What to combine nearby

Siberijos Tower is easy to link with Lake Plateliai, Paplatelė Educational Trail, Beržoras village, and the Cold War Museum in Plokštinė. This lets you first see the landscape from above and then experience it on trails or in the museum.

If you have only a short time in Žemaitija National Park, the tower is a good orientation point. With half a day, it should be one stop in a wider Plateliai route.
