Names and variants

Plateliai Lake

The largest lake in Samogitia

Lake Plateliai is the centre of Žemaitija National Park and one of the clearest symbols of the Samogitian landscape. VLE gives its area as 1,216 ha, making it the largest lake in Samogitia, with a length of 8.4 km, maximum width of 3.3 km, and average depth of 11.4 m. VLE notes that the lake basin is complex: part is tunnel-valley in origin, part consists of dead-ice hollows, and the lake is partly dammed, first in the late eighteenth century and again in 1960 when a new dam was built at the southern end during construction of the Gandinga hydroelectric plant.

This is a lake worth experiencing from more than a beach. Its islands, wooded shores, Šventorkalnis peninsula, Plokštinė forests, and viewpoints create a full-day route.

Islands and depth

VLE states that Lake Plateliai has seven islands, covering 20.5 ha in total, and a shoreline of 20.5 km. The largest are Briedsalė at 5.6 ha and Castle Island at 4.6 ha, where the Plateliai castle site stood. The islands are one of the strongest parts of the lake's identity because they are clearly visible from viewpoints and change the scale of the water space. VLE also notes a natural rarity: endemic whitefish have survived in the lake since the Ice Age.

Different sources give the maximum depth slightly differently: VLE gives 46 m, while Žemaitija National Park information often mentions about 48.5 m. For travellers, the main point is that this is a deep lake with a pronounced basin, not a shallow recreation pond.

Castle Island and Šventorkalnis

Lake Plateliai also has a historical layer. Žemaitija National Park information connects Castle Island with a fifteenth-century castle, and the wooden bridge piles that once linked it with Šventorkalnis form part of the surviving heritage. VLE states that the Šventorkalnis peninsula is an archaeological reserve where underwater archaeology has been carried out since 1987; remains of a sixteenth- to seventeenth-century bridge and even a yacht have been found.

For that reason the lake's islands are not just decorative patches of forest in water. They help speak about Samogitian defence, local estate history, and old movement across the lake space. VLE notes that the islands and peninsulas of Lake Plateliai have been a natural heritage object and hydrographic natural monument since 2000.

The best viewpoint

Saugoma.lt presents the Lake Plateliai viewpoint as a convenient visitor point on the north-eastern edge of Plateliai. From here you can see the islands, Šventorkalnis peninsula, and the more distant Plokštinė forests.

The viewpoint also matters for accessibility: it has visitor infrastructure, convenient stopping points, information elements, and details adapted for people with mobility or visual impairments.

Šeirė Trail and a route around the lake

If you want to do more than look, choose the Šeirė educational trail. Saugoma.lt presents it as a route in the Lake Plateliai environment, and part of the trail connects with the cycling route around the lake.

Around Plateliai you can build a wider route: the viewpoint, Plateliai town, Šeirė Trail, beaches, water activities, and Plokštinė-side sites can fill a day without rushing.

How to visit Lake Plateliai responsibly

Lake Plateliai lies inside a national park, so recreation should happen in designated places. Camping, fires, parking, and boating must follow park rules and local signs.

In summer, plan earlier because the most popular bathing places and parking areas fill up. For a quieter impression, choose morning, evening, or a time outside the main summer weekend.
