Old Town Post, Senamiesčio paštas
A bronze envelope at a main Old Town junction
The composition stands at the junction of Tiltų and Turgaus streets, by 12 Tiltų Street. A roughly metre-high bronze box resembles an envelope set upright. Klaipėda's coat of arms appears on it, while two pigeons huddle on top.
Klaipėda sculptor Klaudijus Pūdymas created the work and Mindaugas Zabarauskas provided the architectural design. It was unveiled on 10 March 2009, the eve of Lithuania's Restoration of Independence Day, following an initiative by the Old Town business association.
Not a post office, but a box for civic suggestions
Old Town Post originally had a practical role: people could insert thanks, complaints, proposals and greetings concerning the Old Town. At the unveiling, the sculptor handed the key to a business-association representative, and letters were meant to be collected and read regularly.
