Naisiai Manor Estate, Naisiai Literature Museum
A surviving estate with several kinds of memory
Naisiai Manor is at 9 Plento Street in Naisiai, Meškuičiai Eldership, Šiauliai District. Four buildings survive in the former manor estate, including the former manor house, so the visit is about an ensemble rather than one facade or museum room.
The former palace is also a place of literary memory. Estate management, local education, and the birthplace of poet Zigmas Gaidamavičius-Gėlė meet here, making the grounds worth reading as a layered story instead of treating them only as a photo backdrop.
From the state treasury to a Zubov estate
Until 1795, Naisiai belonged to the state treasury and the Šiauliai economy. Empress Catherine II presented Naisiai, together with the whole Šiauliai economy, to Count Platon Zubov, placing the site within the wider history of imperial administration and the Šiauliai estates.
A manor was established here in 1822. The date distinguishes the estate’s later formation from the earlier administrative landscape and shows that Naisiai Manor is not only a twentieth-century museum story. While looking around, notice how the surviving buildings relate to the road and their setting.
A one-class school was part of the estate’s history
On 19 April 1904, Count Vladimir Zubov was permitted to open four one-class primary schools on his estates. One began operating in Naisiai, so the site’s story includes the arrival of rural education as well as the names of its owners.
Ana Guseva was the first Naisiai teacher. She had graduated from a Saint Petersburg progymnasium and had previously taught the children of E. Gaidamavičius, the manor manager. This gives the estate a human scale: its education history is connected to people, not only dates and buildings.
A literature museum in the poet’s birthplace
After the First World War, the estate belonged to Aleksandra Zubovaitė Fledžinskienė. Later changes did not erase the site’s memory, and the four surviving buildings allow visitors to see the estate as a cultural-heritage fragment shaped by different ownership and uses.
On 17 October 1987, a literature museum opened in the manor house, identified as the birthplace of poet Zigmas Gaidamavičius-Gėlė (1894–1912). That museum history gives the visit its content, but check the current exhibition and access arrangements before travelling.
