A 19th-century pharmacy from shop to cellar
The most vivid part reconstructs a late-19th-century Lithuanian city pharmacy. Visitors begin in the oficina, the prescription and customer room, then follow the working chain through the boiling room, medicinal-stock room, laboratory, and cellar rather than seeing only decorative shelves.
Look closely at labelled vessels, balances, presses, and production tools. They recall a time when many medicines were prepared on site to a doctor's prescription. The display works independently, but a guide can explain obsolete terms and the purpose of unfamiliar objects.
Doctors' rooms and medical education
A second strand covers doctors' consulting rooms, medical instruments, and professional training. It reaches the origins of higher medical education in Kaunas, linking the patient's everyday experience with university history, research, and the education of doctors.
The museum remains an LSMU teaching base used for lectures and practical classes. Its objects are therefore more than curiosities: they help explain changing medical knowledge, safety standards, and professional responsibility.
How two historical collections came together
Organised collection of pharmacy heritage began in 1936 through Lithuanian pharmacists' organisations. Professor Aleksandras Vileišis started assembling medical-history objects in 1948, and Vytautas Siudikas joined in 1957. His display was named the Museum of Medical History in 1977.
The medical and pharmaceutical holdings were later united in today's LSMU institution. Their distinct origins remain visible: one line centres on the pharmacist's craft and medicinal substances, while the other explores doctors, instruments, and medical science.
Opening hours, tickets, and tours
On 21 July 2026, LSMU listed Tuesday-Saturday hours of 10:00-17:00, with last admission at 16:15 and closing one hour earlier before public holidays. Adult admission was €2, child or student admission €1, and a family ticket €4.
