The exhibition matters more than a permanent collection
There is no single unchanging display. Temporary shows by Lithuanian classics, emerging artists, and international photographers define the gallery, so read the current exhibition note first. Follow a series from beginning to end, attending to sequence rather than only the most attractive frame.
The small scale encourages attention to print size, paper, framing, and layout. If the shop or publication table is open, browse the catalogue: an artist may sequence a different story in book form. Openings and talks can change ordinary admission arrangements.
A photography centre operating since 1979
Founded in 1979, the venue describes itself as one of Europe's oldest photography galleries. The Kaunas branch of the Lithuanian Photographers Association runs it. Its long-term activity includes exhibition-making, publishing, artist residencies, education, digitisation, and international projects.
Kaunas matters because many internationally recognised Lithuanian photographers lived and worked here. Ask not only what an image depicts, but when and in which political and technological circumstances its series was made, and how it complicates the idea of a Lithuanian school of photography.
An Old Town building under renewal
The gallery occupies a building beside Town Hall Square whose historical core reaches the mid-17th century and reconstruction after the 1655-1660 war. White vaulted rooms offer calm display space, but damp and ageing services eventually made preservation difficult.
A 2024-2026 project planned repairs, improved climate and accessibility, a photography information and education centre, and access to digitised heritage. Since work phases may affect rooms or entrance routes, check official news and the exhibition calendar on the day.
Opening hours, admission, and free Wednesday
On 21 July 2026, official hours were Tuesday-Friday 11:00-18:00 and Saturday-Sunday 11:00-17:00, with Monday closed. Adult admission was €2, while schoolchild, student, senior, and some other concession tickets were €1.
Wednesday admission was free, and children under 12 and other listed categories also entered free. The gallery closes on public holidays and closes one hour earlier on their eves. Recheck prices, concessions, and renovation changes before setting out for 2 Vilniaus Street.
