Milikoniai Viewpoint, Šilainiai Viewpoint
Kaunas from the Šilainiai slope
The viewpoint sits on Milikoniai Hill near Linkuvos Street. The eye drops into Vilijampolė, rises along Žaliakalnis, and reaches the towers and roofs of central Kaunas.
Unlike Aleksotas, this view crosses the Neris valley. It makes the city's heights, slopes, and low neighbourhoods especially legible.
The 1939 Perkūno žirgai and the Samogitian Highway
Sculptor Vytautas Kašuba created the seven-metre column-shaped monument Perkūno žirgai. Erected in 1939, it commemorates the official opening of the Samogitian Highway, which connected Lithuania's temporary capital Kaunas with Klaipėda and became an interwar emblem of technical progress.
The sides bear the coats of arms of Kaunas and Klaipėda; Perkūnas's head, lightning and two horses looking in opposite directions crown the column. The monument was moved to its present position when the viewpoint was laid out and conserved and restored in 2026, including its stone joints and Telesforas Kulakauskas inscription.
A protected Žaliakalnis and New Town silhouette
In KPD's 2025 protection-planning material for Kaunas New Town, Milikoniai is analysed as viewpoint S3. The Žaliakalnis and New Town panorama is identified as a silhouette and slope space to protect.
This makes the platform more than a popular photo stop. It reveals the relationships of roofs, slopes, and towers that create a recognisable image of Kaunas.
When to visit and what to identify
In clear daylight, find Vilijampolė's street grid, the green Žaliakalnis belt, Old Town towers, and the more distant New Town profile. City lights sharpen the levels after dusk.
Sunset is popular. Arriving slightly earlier gives a quieter view and enough light to read building forms.
Access and steep-slope safety
The Linkuvos approach has been renewed, but traffic patterns and parking can change. Follow current signs and keep through-routes clear.
Stay within the prepared viewing area. Supervise children closely and expect slippery surfaces after rain or in winter.
