The Šilainiai I Church on Milikonių Street
Kaunas Holy Spirit (Šilainiai I) Church stands at 18 Milikonių Street in western Kaunas. It is a long, low light building with a dark shallow gabled roof, a broad almost undecorated front gable, and a rhythm of narrow windows. The Šilainiai I identifier matters: it separates this parish from the other Šilainiai churches and parishes.
The churchyard belongs to the urban residential setting, while the map coordinates mark this church complex rather than the nearby Milikonių Hill viewpoint. Visitors should follow parish practice and remember that this is an active place of worship, not simply an architectural photo stop.
From a temporary chapel to a consecrated church
The Šilainiai I community was registered in 1989, and its first temporary chapel dedicated to the Holy Spirit was consecrated in 1994. The current church is associated with architect Eugenijus Miliūnas: its cornerstone was laid in 1997 and construction began in 1998.
The work proceeded in stages. The walls were completed in 2006, the tiled roof was installed in 2007, heated floors arrived in 2009, and the pastoral-evangelisation centre and granite floors were completed in 2012. Archbishop Lionginas Virbalas consecrated the finished church on 4 June 2017.
Restrained architecture and a community space
The exterior is defined not by a tower or historicist decoration but by a long nave, light plaster, a dark roof, and a sequence of slender vertical windows. The wide front gable keeps a calm scale appropriate to Šilainiai. This is neither a Gothic cathedral nor an old wooden village church.
The building was intended for more than services. Parish pastoral work is central to its story, and the later evangelisation centre and community rooms give the building a social role. These spaces show that the church still serves a living social function.
Four bells and their names
Four bells were blessed at the Šilainiai I Church on 9 October 2022. The parish announcement names them Mary, Gabriel, Michael, and Raphael, and identifies the bell maker as Antoni Kruszcewski. The bells belong to the church community's story, not to a separate attraction.
Some of the bells may not be visible from outside, so visitors should not expect a bell-tower exhibition or a scheduled demonstration. Ask parish staff before seeking additional information or photographing the church grounds.
