Merguva Viewing Platform, Merguva Lake Observation Tower
The park's largest oxbow lake
The platform is south of Bitėnai at 55.0531934, 22.0489170. Its official record places it between Merguva Lake and the gravel road through the Ragainė bend meadows, about two kilometres from Bitėnai recreation area.
Merguva is a remnant of an old Nemunas channel. As the river shifted toward Ragainė, it left a flat sandy plain with long oxbow 'eyes' between Šereitlaukis forest heights and the present channel. Merguva is the largest and remains connected to the Nemunas at its northern end.
The wooden deck rises only slightly above the meadow, but the flat terrain gives it a long horizon. Older pages call it a tower; in practice, it is a low viewing platform.
Ragainė across the Nemunas
Across the meadows and river lies Neman, historically called Ragainė in Lithuanian. The official description notes the tall pulp-mill tower and the possibility of seeing ruins of the masonry castle built by the Teutonic Order in the early fifteenth century.
Visibility depends on weather, mist, vegetation and light, so castle outlines are not guaranteed. Binoculars help distinguish distant landmarks and watch flood-meadow birds.
Across the river is Russia's Kaliningrad Region. The platform is in Lithuania and is not a border crossing. Do not fly a drone, photograph protected border facilities or ignore border and park signs.
Gravel access, floods and safety
The low meadow road can be dusty in drought, muddy after rain or inaccessible during a flood. Do not pass barriers or drive onto meadows. If uncertain, ask at Rambynas Park Visitor Centre.
Park only where permitted without blocking passage. Wet timber can be slippery; do not climb railings, exceed any posted capacity or leave children unsupervised.
Allow 20-45 minutes. Bring binoculars, insect repellent, water and a windproof layer. Stay on the route, avoid disturbing birds and take waste away.
