Lampėdžio Lake and Lampėdis are the same water body
The VLE entry on Lampėdžiai describes the Kaunas district and identifies Lampėdžio Lake and Lampėdžiai Forest Park in its northern part. Maps often shorten the lake name to Lampėdis, so these are not two competing lakes. UNO Park, Lampėdžiai Beach, and the campsite are separate shore attractions around the same water body.
The lake lies in Kaunas's Vilijampolė eldership, between Lampėdžiai and Žemieji Kaniūkai. The checked 54.91619, 23.80967 point is a useful water-body centre, not a particular beach entrance or car park. Navigation to the Gervių Street beach and to the opposite shore may use different roads.
VLE uses the name Lampėdžio Lake, while everyday usage often shortens it to Lampėdis. Check official sources for current water quality and municipal infrastructure, because the lake's different shores are not maintained in the same way.
A former quarry became an elongated urban lake
The Institute of Hygiene calls the bathing site Lampėdžiai Quarry, while municipal and VLE texts use the established Lampėdžio Lake name. This origin helps explain the varied shore: one section has a sandy bathing beach, another has woodland and more natural vegetation, while other parts serve technical or organised recreation uses.
Real shore photographs show a broad calm water surface, pale sand, a belt of pine and deciduous trees, and a small pier. It is a place for a short walk and swimming, not a completely wild shoreline with identical access everywhere. A sandy shallow entry can give way to a sharper drop, so follow the day's signs and take responsibility for your own water safety.
Lampėdis should not be confused with the Kaunas Lagoon simply because both are in Kaunas. Lampėdis is a quarry-origin water body, while the lagoon is the impounded Nemunas. The distinction matters when planning water sports, a shore route, and expectations about the landscape.
The southern shore gained more facilities in 2026
In May 2026, Kaunas City Municipality described renewed southern-shore facilities near Gervių Street. Its announcement mentioned loose sand, a children's playground, an exercise zone, changing cabins, paths, steps, ramps, lifeguard stations, and information boards designed for blind visitors. These facilities belong to the specific public beach zone, not the entire lakeside perimeter.
The same municipal announcement described a spacious car park and a planned rising barrier to limit vehicle traffic farther along Gervių Street. Check which car park is open and whether the traffic arrangement has changed before travelling. Do not drive onto grass or stop where the shore road is reserved for pedestrians or emergency services.
Automated toilets, outdoor showers, and drinking fountains were listed in the May announcement as an upcoming addition. That is not a guarantee that every service will operate throughout the season. Follow signs on arrival, and use only a clearly designated working city drinking fountain for drinking water.
The bathing area, rowing course, and water sports have different rules
Lampėdis is used for more than swimming. The municipality has described a rowing course and the Bangpūtys sports-school base, while the southern shore contains public beach infrastructure. Swimmers, rowers, paddleboard users, and wakeboard visitors need to respect one another's zones and barriers.
The Institute of Hygiene's 2024 bathing-site profile describes the southern shore, woodland, recreation area, sports courts, children's play areas, outdoor exercise equipment, and cycle access. It also says that domestic animals are prohibited on the beach. Because the shore is being renewed, make the final decision from the newest signs on site.
Water tests are seasonal, not a permanent permission to swim. In May 2026, the municipality said that water and sand tests were being carried out before the season, but this page does not repeat laboratory results. Do not enter the water when a prohibition is posted, water is blooming, a storm is approaching, or a rowing lane is operating.
Around Lampėdis can become a longer active day
The official Kaunas cycling-route page offers the nearly 8.5 km Around Lampėdis loop. It connects Lampėdžiai Beach, Lampėdžiai, the Nemunas and Nevėžis Confluence Landscape Reserve, and the return along Raudondvario Highway. This is an urban cycling and shore route, not a continuous footpath immediately beside the water.
On foot, choose a shorter shore section rather than joining the whole loop without a plan. Some streets, cycleways, and beach approaches are shared-use spaces, so follow traffic signs and do not stop in a cycle lane. If you want to reach the confluence, estimate the distance, heat, and return time in advance.
In 2026, Kaunas Municipality stated that during the warm season, from 1 May to 30 September, paid parking operates from 8 a.m. to midnight at the Raudondvario Highway and Gervių Street car parks on both sides of Lampėdis, at 0.50 euros per hour. Check signs and payment instructions before travelling because parking rules are seasonal.
