Bijotė, Bijotės recreation area
Lake Bijotė is a large water body in the Pageluvis landscape
Lake Bijotė lies in southern Šiauliai District, about 4 km south of Kurtuvėnai, within Kurtuvėnai Regional Park. VLE gives an area of 61 hectares, a length of about 1.5 km, a maximum width of 0.9 km, and 5.1 km of shoreline. Forest surrounds the lake, giving it a contained, wooded character.
The lake has an irregular shape: its northwestern and eastern shores are steep, dry, and continuously wooded, while the southern shore is boggy. The water surface is at 127.6 m above sea level. These details show that Lake Bijotė is not one uniform beach: different shores offer different kinds of visit.
Lake Bijotė was dammed in 1961. An unnamed stream flows into it, while the Šventupis, a right tributary of the Dubysa, flows out; VLE gives an annual turnover of about 36 percent. The A12 follows the western shore, with the villages of Pabijočiai and Butiškės nearby.
A mosaic of woodland and boggy shores defines the lake
Lake Bijotė is shaped by more than open water. On drier shores, woodland reaches almost to the water, while wetter areas bring reeds, damp meadows, and soft ground. A short stop at the recreation area and a longer walk beside the lake can therefore feel like two different experiences.
Move around the lake in a way that avoids damaging wet ground. A boggy shore is not an invitation to look for the straightest route to the water: some places may be soft, reed-filled, or sensitive to trampling. Stay on existing paths, within the recreation area, and beside local signs.
The Environmental Protection Department's water-body guide lists Bijotė as a 60.7-hectare lake in Kurtuvėnai Regional Park, while VLE gives the rounded figure of 61 hectares. The difference is rounding, not a different identity: this is a substantial wooded water body in the Pageluvis lake district.
The Bijotės recreation area by the A12 is the clearest access point
Saugoma describes the Bijotės recreation area beside the A12, at the Šiauliai-Kelmė district boundary, and gives the coordinates 55.788, 23.049. The area is named Kristininis Lake. This coordinate marks a visitable lake access point, not the geographical centre of the lake or a navigation point for the entire shoreline.
The area has a picnic place with stylised tables, benches, swings, and large stones. Saugoma also lists three campsites with tables, benches, and fire pits where tents may be pitched and fires lit. Use only the designated places and do not move the recreation activity onto the natural boggy shore.
The A12 makes traffic safety important: stop only in the lawful area, avoid walking on the road, and keep children and pets close. If you want to see another shore, first establish whether it actually has a public and safe access route.
Check boating rules before setting out
The Environmental Protection Department states that non-self-propelled craft without a motor or with an electric motor may be used on Lake Bijotė throughout the boating season. Craft with combustion engines are listed as prohibited.
The boating season is defined as the period from the disappearance of ice until ice cover forms; if permanent ice cover does not form, a separate calendar interval applies. Rules and signs can be updated, so check the Department's information and on-site signs before launching.
Swimming is not automatically guaranteed simply because a recreation area exists beside the lake. Before entering the water, check the current bathing-water information published by Šiauliai District Municipality, the weather, and any warnings on site; children should remain under adult supervision near the water.
A quiet visit preserves Lake Bijotė's character
Lake Bijotė suits a stop beside a forest lake, a picnic at the recreation area, and a longer exploration of Kurtuvėnai Regional Park. For more walking, combine the visit with Pageluvis lake-district routes that include Lake Barsukynas, hillforts, and other lakes. Each object has its own access and safety conditions.
Boggy shores, slopes, roots, and wet grass can be slippery after rain. Wear shoes with good grip, carry water, stay within daylight hours, and do not let children climb onto docks or wade into reeds alone.
Light fires only in the fire pits listed by Saugoma, leave no litter, and do not drive to the water where road or park signs prohibit it. Lake Bijotė is at its best when the recreation area is used carefully and the woodland and wetland edges remain quiet.
