Not a lake, but the Lėvuo Reservoir
Kupiškis Reservoir often looks like a lake, but the most accurate name is the Kupiškis or Lėvuo Reservoir. It is an artificial water body formed by damming the Lėvuo, so its history is connected with water-management decisions as well as nature.
VLE states that the reservoir was built in 1984 and that the Lėvuo was dammed in 1986, 110 km from its mouth. The dam is 11 m high and has a shaft spillway.
Size and shoreline
VLE gives an area of 828 ha, length of 19.9 km, maximum depth of 10 m, and average depth of 4 m. The official water-body cadastre calculates the area somewhat differently, about 816 ha, so the difference is best understood as a matter of methodology.
The shoreline is 54.9 km long, and the shore is relatively little indented. This matters for planning: Kupiškis Reservoir is not just one beach point but a long Lėvuo valley water landscape.
Islands, Jutkoniai Peninsula, and Uošvės Liežuvis
The reservoir has three islands. VLE gives their areas as 3.1 ha for the northern island, 8.6 ha for the middle island, and 8.97 ha for the southern island. The southern island is called Uošvės Liežuvis and was formerly a peninsula, separated from the shore by a dug channel. The Jutkoniai Peninsula also projects into the reservoir, giving the otherwise modest shoreline several strong forms.
Uošvės Liežuvis is important not only for its name. It contains a dendrological park, so a reservoir route can combine water views, island geography, and plants.
Streams and nature
The Juodupė, Mituva, Ožkalaukis, Rakštupis, Šiekštė, and other tributaries flow into Kupiškis Reservoir. This water system shows that the reservoir gathers not only the Lėvuo's flow but a broader local drainage network.
VLE mentions a recreation zone and nesting by the great curlew. That is a reminder that the reservoir matters both for leisure and for birds, so visitors should avoid noise and respect shore habitats.
Visiting
Research did not find one common opening time or ticket for Kupiškis Reservoir. It is a public water landscape, but specific bathing areas, events, water sports, or island visits may have seasonal rules.
When planning activities, check announcements from Kupiškis District Municipality and local organisers. A short stop takes 1-2 hours; summer rest or water activities are better planned as a half-day visit.
