Melnragė I, Pirmoji Melnragė Beach, First Melnragė Beach
A separate official beach in Pirmoji Melnragė
Klaipėda City Municipality lists Melnragė I separately from Melnragė II, today's Central Beach, Giruliai, and the two Smiltynė beaches. This is a useful practical boundary: I Melnragė is not a general name for the whole coast from the harbour entrance to Giruliai.
The Google Maps coordinates 55.7373122, 21.0859848 mark the sandy beach beside one of the Pirmoji Melnragė accesses, not a car park or the only entrance. Several paths cross the protective foredune, so follow signs on arrival and use a formal access.
The neighbouring sites have different identities. Melnragė Park is the path-and-recreation landscape behind the foredune, the north pier is Klaipėda harbour infrastructure south of the bathing area, and II Melnragė, Central Beach, and Giruliai are separate beach zones farther north.
Audros Street access and the 2026 works
On 5 March 2026, the municipality announced plans to renew the section of Audros Street from the Melnragė roundabout to the foredune and the path across the dunes towards the lifeguard post. The notice covered replacement paving, retaining walls, lighting, electrical lines, and rainwater drainage.
The municipality said that safe beach access would be maintained during construction, with temporary traffic control if required. This is not confirmation that every element is already finished: check recent municipal notices before travelling and follow any diversion or contractor signs on site.
Parking near popular accesses fills quickly on summer weekends. The map coordinates do not guarantee a space, so park only as road signs allow, keep rescue and maintenance routes clear, and consider public transport or a bicycle.
Seasonal services, lifeguards, and warning flags
Klaipėda Beaches says the official bathing season usually runs from 1 June to 15 September, with lifeguards normally working daily from 09:00 to 21:00 on the Melnragė and Giruliai beaches. This is the operator's general schedule: confirm the zone, same-day cover, and any changes on the information board or through official notices.
The shore is accessible year-round without an admission fee, but lifeguards, changing cabins, toilets, and other facilities are seasonal. The operator says that principal beaches have public toilets and changing cabins during the season. Its separate toilet page lists a paid toilet and shower at Kopų g. 1A in I Melnragė; verify the current price and opening time because website details may change.
Swim only when the lifeguard flag and sea conditions permit. A red flag prohibits bathing, while strong westerly wind, waves, and rip currents can endanger even confident swimmers. Keep children within reach and stay inside the marked swimming zone.
A changing coast and a protected foredune
I Melnragė is a dynamic Baltic shore reshaped by storms, waves, and windblown sand. Municipal records of beach nourishment and foredune restoration show why a path, the width of the shore, or an individual facility should not be assumed to look permanently the same.
Dune grasses and brushwood fencing help trap sand. Reach the beach only by formal paths, do not cross protective fences, make shortcuts through vegetation, or disturb coastal-management structures. A formal access may be temporarily fenced or rerouted after a storm.
The proximity of the north pier does not mean that the bathing area continues to the harbour entrance. During earlier coastal works, the municipality explicitly distinguished the official beach from the section nearer the pier; follow current signs for the boundaries of any works, prohibition, or supervised zone.
Planning a visit
Allow about an hour for a relaxed walk or sunset and 1-4 hours for swimming and beach time. Even on a warm day, the coast can be much cooler and windier than central Klaipėda, so bring layers, sun protection, and drinking water.
Before leaving, check the marine forecast, warning flag, bathing-water notices, and any restrictions at the Audros Street access. Barbecues, alcohol, and disruptive noise are prohibited, while pets may enter only specially marked zones during the bathing season.
For a longer route, combine the shore with Melnragė Park. Treat the north pier as a separate destination and approach it only in safe wind and wave conditions; do not merge II Melnragė, Central Beach, or Giruliai into the same I Melnragė map point.
