Central Beach, former Disabled People's Beach
Central Beach since 2025
The current official name is Klaipėda Central Beach. It was adopted for the 2025 season and replaced the former Lithuanian name meaning Disabled People's Beach. Municipal documents formalized the change, and nearby public-transport stops were renamed accordingly.
The new name does not mean that accessibility features were removed. The municipality stressed the opposite aim: accessible design should be standard across all city beaches rather than a label separating one zone for a particular group.
Almost 400 metres between Melnragė and Giruliai
Central Beach covers an almost 400-metre stretch between II Melnragė and Giruliai beaches. The Google Maps point at Pamario g. 8 marks its specific central access rather than the entire long Klaipėda shoreline.
Wooden paths cross the protective foredune from the inland side. Keep to marked approaches, avoid walking through dune vegetation, and do not disturb brushwood fences, which trap windblown sand and help protect the coast.
Accessibility and assisted bathing
According to the municipality, the approaches have wider changing cabins, wooden routes suitable for wheelchairs, and ramps to viewing terraces. In 2025, additional paths at Central Beach improved access closer to the water for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
Visitors with reduced mobility were also offered an amphibious bathing chair with lifeguard assistance. This is a seasonal service dependent on staffing, weather, waves, and equipment availability, so contact Klaipėda Beaches before travelling to confirm the exact assistance required.
Lifeguards, water quality, and beach rules
Klaipėda's official bathing season usually runs from 1 June to 15 September, with lifeguards on the Melnragė and Giruliai coast normally working daily from 09:00 to 21:00 in season. Check the exact 2026 schedule, warning flag, and bathing-water information on local boards and official notices.
Lifeguard presence does not mean that the sea is always safe. A red flag prohibits swimming, while strong wind, waves, and rip currents can endanger even confident swimmers. Keep children within reach and remain inside the marked bathing zone.
The beach is free and accessible year-round, but toilets, changing cabins, lifeguards, and specialized equipment are seasonal. Barbecues, alcohol, and disruptive noise are prohibited, and pets are allowed only in marked zones during the bathing season.
