The crucial fact: the amusement rides no longer operate
The map label is a historical reference, not a description of a current service. Vaikų Pasaulis no longer has an operating Ferris wheel, carousels, or ticketed mechanical rides. People now come to walk, spend time with children, exercise, and enjoy views of the Elektrėnai Reservoir.
Opened in 2021, the renewed space was planned as a leisure park for different age groups. Walking and cycling paths curve between mature trees, alongside lighting, an amphitheatre-like event space, children's play areas, and active-recreation facilities. It is a clear example of an abandoned site returning to everyday urban life.
From a remarkable Soviet-era funfair to closure
Vilnijos vartai dates the construction of the amusement park to May 1973. It was exceptional for more than Elektrėnai: carousels and swings operated here, while a 40-metre observation wheel with 20 cabins became one of the city's defining silhouettes. Some secondary texts repeat 1986, but the stronger local-history source clearly states 1973.
The park ceased operating in 2012. Unsafe rusting equipment continued to attract photographers interested in abandoned places, but it was not a legal or safe visitor attraction. The old funfair was dismantled in 2019 and conversion into a public recreation area followed.
What recalls the old Vaikų Pasaulis today
The great observation wheel and most mechanical rides have not survived. The present park is defined instead by curving new paths, white low landscape elements, an amphitheatre, planting, and proximity to water. A visible section of former steel ride structure acts as a memory marker, not equipment intended for use.
The place therefore works on two levels. Children encounter a contemporary movement and play landscape, while adults can read a fragment of the social history of a city built beside a power station. Archive photographs make it easier to imagine how densely the rides once occupied this green reservoir shore.
A walk beside the Elektrėnai Reservoir
The municipality built a circular walking and cycling route around the peninsula of the former park, connecting it to existing urban routes. It passes among trees and close to the water, so the site is more than a playground: take a short loop, pause at the amphitheatre, or continue towards other landmarks on the Elektrėnai waterfront.
Path lighting reveals the sinuous plan after dusk, but children still need supervision near water and active-recreation features. Cyclists and scooter users should slow down in shared pedestrian areas, especially at weekends and during events.
Admission, address, and planning
This is a public outdoor space, so there is no admission ticket for an ordinary walk. Separate events may have their own conditions. Google Maps gives Prano Noreikos Street 20, while older project documents describe parcels on Draugystės Street; use the exact map pin for navigation.
There are no amusement-ride opening hours because the mechanical attractions no longer operate. Allow 1-2 hours for the park, or half a day if combining it with the beach and pontoon pier. Check Elektrėnai Municipality information before a special event and favour daylight for a routine visit.
