Duobakalnis has two platforms
Saugoma identifies two birdwatching hides built in 2019-2020. One is at the end of Draugelių Street in Leonavas village; the other stands beside the Flooded Nemunas Valley outdoor exhibition. An older park description connects them with the Jonas Aistis memorial post and the direction of the Bird Islands.
The coordinate 54.8287476, 24.2035266 marks the mapped birdwatching hide rather than the geometric midpoint of both sites. Saugoma gives separate LKS coordinates for each hide, so use signs and the outdoor exhibition to find the second and plan to continue on foot.
Kaunas Lagoon opens beyond the forest
The hides stand on a wooded Kaunas Lagoon shore. One overlooks the Bird Islands, which form the Arlaviškiai Ornithological Reserve, and the Kruonis pumped-storage plant; reeds and open reservoir water fill the foreground at both viewpoints.
Saugoma recommends late September to early October for the greatest variety. Large groups of tufted ducks, goldeneyes, coots, and cormorants may then be seen. This is not a complete checklist or a promise: quiet movement, low voices, and binoculars remain more useful than hurried photography.
The forest carries the memory of flooded villages
The Duobakalnis campsite has a memorial post for poet Jonas Aistis and for Kampiškiai village, which now lies beneath the lagoon. The reservoir formed after the hydroelectric dam was built, so the water panorama conceals the former lived landscape of the Nemunas valley.
Birdwatching here connects with local memory: from one platform you can think not only about species but also about the people whose homes, fields, and woodland strips disappeared under the water. That context gives the viewpoint more depth than a scenic overlook alone.
The approach leads to a campsite, not an urban park
The official description places Duobakalnis campsite in Viršužiglis, Taurakiemis eldership. It can be reached from the Viršužiglis side by turning onto the road behind the church, or from the Arlaviškiai side via Draugelių Street. Leave the car in the designated area and continue on foot.
The campsite description lists forest furniture, a shelter, an outdoor toilet, fire sites, and a spring. These facilities belong to the campsite as a whole rather than to each platform, so do not expect a separate toilet or enclosed visitor centre beside the viewpoints.
Watch quietly and follow park rules
The platforms are open-air facilities in a protected area. Do not climb on railings, damage vegetation, or try to attract birds with food. Use a drone only after checking the restrictions that apply to the exact location, and follow park signs particularly carefully during nesting periods.
The official recreation page says that fires may be lit only in installed fire sites and that visitors must leave the area clean. It presents a one-time park visitor ticket as a way to support maintenance; check the current rules and on-site information before travelling.
