Ryna Cave, Čiobiškis sandstone cave
Nine metres in sandstone, not a karst cavern
VLE describes a nine-metre erosional cavity whose maximum height is 1.5 metres and decreases inward. It formed in obliquely layered grey-yellow sand cemented into sandstone, not in the soluble gypsum or dolomite typical of northern Lithuania's karst caves.
The cave has two openings and small side passages. It sits around five metres above the Ryna stream and is described as dry. Those dimensions explain the geology; they are not an invitation to crawl into a narrow, unsupported cavity.
Why the authorities ask people to stay away
An October 2024 inspection found the approach unsafe. Repeated climbing had destabilised the sandy slope, which was sliding towards the stream, and warning signs were installed by the bridge and cave. The protected-areas authority repeated its request in December to choose other places temporarily.
The risk affects the cave as well as visitors. Trampling accelerates erosion around a sensitive heritage site. A strong map rating or attractive social-media photograph does not cancel an official safety warning.
Private land and no approved visitor access
Širvintos Municipality states that the cave is on private land and is not included among sites adapted for visiting. Any future access work requires agreement with the landowner.
Do not seek an informal trail, cross barriers or bypass signs. The coordinate is a representative heritage marker, not permission to enter the property or a verified parking location.
What to choose instead
Until a new official notice confirms safe access, learn about the cave through reliable descriptions and photographs. In Čiobiškis, view the manor and church exteriors, the river-confluence landscape, or use the seasonal ferry after confirming operation.
For a nature walk, select a maintained Neris Regional Park trail. Conditions may change, but confirmation must come from the owner and responsible authorities, not an unofficial map comment.
