Vištytis Regional Park: the roof of Suvalkija
Vištytis Regional Park lies in south-western Suvalkija, near the tri-border of Lithuania, Poland, and Russia's Kaliningrad Region. The park was established in 1992, and according to VLE its area is about 10,428 ha. It protects the highest part of the Sūduva Highland and scenic Lake Vištytis.
This is one of Lithuania's hillier corners. The highest Suvalkija hills rise here: Janauka Hill reaches 284.81 m above sea level and is considered the highest summit of the Baltic Highlands in Lithuania. Moraine hills, lakes, and forests create an impressive, almost mountainous relief.
Lake Vištytis
The heart of the park is Lake Vištytis, one of Lithuania's deepest and cleanest lakes. VLE gives its total area as 1,860 ha, of which 381 ha belong to Lithuania, and its maximum depth as 54 m. Because of its depth and clarity, the lake is sometimes called Lithuania's Baikal.
The lake is transboundary: the eastern shore follows the border with Russia's Kaliningrad Region, so it cannot be entered or crossed. On the Lithuanian side, the lake and its surroundings form the park's most scenic part, popular with holidaymakers and birdwatchers.
Nature and borderland landscape
Large forests surround the park, including Rominta Forest, known for its wildlife. In protected areas you may encounter cranes, black storks, and lesser spotted eagles. The Grybingiris Strict Nature Reserve protects Lithuania's only natural hornbeam forest habitat.
The tri-border gives the park a particular character: a marker stands at the meeting point of the three state borders, and in clear weather Poland can be seen from the highlands. This combination of relief, water, and borderland makes the park one of Suvalkija's distinctive corners.
How to visit
The park visitor centre operates in Vištytis at Vytauto g. 8 and has an exhibition about the Suvalkija region; it is the practical place to ask about trails and routes. The park has the Šilelis nature trail, the Three Lakes viewpoint, and an observation tower about 15 m high, opening views of the highlands and lake.
The park territory is freely accessible, and the best visiting season is late spring to autumn. Plan half a day to a full day. When visiting the lake, remember that the eastern shore is a state border and must not be crossed.
