Veisiejai Regional Park: life between waters

Veisiejai Regional Park lies in southern Lithuania, in Lazdijai District around the town of Veisiejai. It was established in 1992, and VLE gives its area as about 12,259 ha. Its heart is the forested Šlavantai-Veisiejai-Kapčiamiestis lake district with 37 lakes, so water is genuinely everywhere here.

The largest and deepest park lake is Ančia, almost 500 ha in area. Forests cover more than half the park, mainly pinewoods. This mix of waters and forests supports abundant wildlife; nearly 150 bird species have been recorded in the park.

A landscape of Esperanto origins

Veisiejai is famous for more than nature. In 1885 Ludwik Zamenhof, the future creator of Esperanto, settled here as a doctor. In Veisiejai he restored and finished his Esperanto manuscript, so the town is regarded as one of Esperanto's cradles.

This story is remembered by a Zamenhof bust in Veisiejai manor park and related memorial places. Veisiejai Regional Park is therefore a rare example of protected nature intertwined with an internationally significant language history.

Visitor centre and routes

The park visitor centre operates in Veisiejai Manor and includes the exhibition Life Between Waters, telling the story of the region's lakes, nature, and people. It is a practical place to begin and to get route information.

The park has about ten tourist routes for walking, cycling, and water travel, including a kayak route linking several lakes. In Kailiniai village a 15 m observation tower opens a panorama of the lake district. The park also protects Veisiejai town heritage, including St George Church, called the Cathedral of Dzūkija.

How to visit

The park territory is freely visited, and the visitor-centre exhibition is free of charge. Late spring to autumn is best for walking trails, paddling lakes, and watching birds.

Plan from half a day to a full day. Combine the visitor centre with Veisiejai Manor, Zamenhof memorial sites, and nearby Dzūkija lakes and towns.
