One artist across many disciplines
Vytautas Kazimieras Jonynas (1907-1997) cannot be contained within the label graphic artist. The gallery shows drawings, sketches, woodcuts, lithographs, book illustrations, and stamps alongside painting, sculpture, and stained-glass designs. Documentary material represents work too monumental to move to Druskininkai, including church interiors and art integrated with architecture.
Jonynas donated every work held by the gallery to Lithuania. The display is therefore not a random collection assembled later but part of the artist's return and conscious decision to pass on his creative legacy.
A gallery that was also a summer home
The building was erected in 1989 to a design by architect Algimantas Kančas and opened to visitors on 4 November 1993. It was conceived not only as exhibition halls but as a gallery-home with domestic spaces. Beside white display walls, visitors can feel the scale and logic of a private sitting room, work area, and household rooms.
From 1989 to 1997, after more than four decades of forced emigration, Jonynas spent summers here, worked, and spoke with visitors. This gives the building memorial value: his art is encountered in a place that still belonged to the artist's everyday life.
Reading prints, stained glass, and small forms
Move close to the line in the graphic-art rooms: black and white behave differently in a woodcut, lithograph, and drawing. Book illustration gains meaning beside the publication because the composition was designed in dialogue with text, while a postage stamp must compress a clear symbol into an exceptionally small format.
Stained-glass designs and photographs of church commissions demand a different kind of looking. Imagine light, architectural scale, and a moving viewer rather than an isolated coloured sheet. Temporary exhibitions also present other artists, so check the current programme before visiting.
2026 hours and prices
On 2026-07-21, opening hours were Tuesday-Friday 10:00-17:00, Saturday 11:00-18:00, and Sunday 11:00-16:00, with Monday closed. Final admission was 30 minutes before closing, which is too late for a thorough visit.
From 4 May 2026, standard admission cost EUR 5. The official order granted a 50% reduction to school pupils, full-time students, pension-age visitors under 80, and other listed groups; permanent displays were free on the final Sunday of each month. Bring proof for a concession and verify current conditions officially.
