A Nemunas Valley View
Plokščiai Viewpoint is a built viewing point right beside Plokščiai church, with a wide panorama over the Nemunas and its valley. It is an equipped platform, not just a natural opening, set on a high Nemunas valley slope in Panemunių Regional Park on the left bank of the river.
Plokščiai stands on the slope of the Nemunas valley, and here, near Plokščiai, is Panemunių Regional Park's highest point, about 71 m above sea level. That makes the relief here among the park's most expressive, with a broad view of the river bends and Panemunė meadows.
The High Nemunas Bank
Although the place name is sometimes associated with an 'outcrop', there is no separate geological object in Plokščiai officially called that. This is a high, steep Nemunas valley slope, complemented by the protected Plokščiai erosional ravine system. All of it belongs to the park's Nemunas landscape reserve.
From the viewpoint you see the broad ribbon of the Nemunas, its bends, and the low Panemunė meadows in the valley. Across the river, on the right bank, is already Jurbarkas District with Veliuona, Raudonė, and Seredžius, so the viewpoint gives a strong sense of the lower Nemunas landscape's scale.
Plokščiai Nature Trail
The viewpoint is a stop on the Plokščiai Nature Trail. This loop is about 3.3 km long and takes roughly 1.5 hours. It links several rare places: the Vaiguva river-street, Lithuania's only street with a stream flowing along its middle for more than half a kilometre; Plokščiai-Vaiguviškiai Hillfort; the legend-filled Šventaduobė hollow with a drinkable spring; and the wooden Plokščiai church with a bell from 1573.
The trail includes wooden sculptures by a folk master, small bridges, stairs, and benches. Plokščiai is also known as a Lithuanian book-distribution place during the press-ban era, visited by National Revival figures, so the route is both natural and historical.
Visiting
The viewpoint and trail are open, free, and accessible year-round; no ticket or registration is needed. The easiest approach is by road from Šakiai, descending into Plokščiai; the viewpoint is beside the church. The panorama itself takes only a few minutes, while the full nature trail takes about 1.5 hours.
The best time is late spring to autumn, when the panorama is strongest and the steeper trail slopes are easier to manage. Combine the visit with other Panemunių Regional Park sites and Šakiai-region manors.
