Gargždai Town Park, Rönne Barons' Manor Park
Gargždai Manor Park by the Minija
Gargždai Manor Park lies beside the Minija River in Gargždai, Klaipėda District. It is the surviving park of the former manor and today functions as the town's central park. The manor house no longer stands, but old alleys and powerful trees still preserve the estate atmosphere.
The park is also interesting as a landscape. A level western terrace drops into the steep Minija bank, with views toward the opposite river side and Gargždai Hillfort. Nature, town leisure, and local history meet in one compact place.
The Rönne Barons' Manor
Gargždai has been mentioned in written sources since 1253. In the 15th-16th centuries the manor belonged to the Kęsgaila family, elders of Samogitia, and later became the centre of a grand-ducal eldership. In the 19th century the estate passed to the Rönne barons, often Lithuanianized as Reniai.
The Rönne period, beginning in the early 19th century, is remembered as the manor's golden age. They reorganized the estate economy and were known for collections of antiquities and a rich library. A fire in 1915 destroyed many manor buildings, so the park is the main value that has survived to the present.
English-Style Park
The Rönne barons created the English, or landscape-style, park in the first half of the 19th century on the Minija slope. It grew to several hectares and was considered one of the most beautiful English-style manor parks in the region. During the Soviet period the park was expanded, so the old and new parts together now cover more than 20 ha.
Trees more than 200 years old grow here; two oaks of roughly that age stand near the main entrance. Straight alleys crossing at right angles are complemented by curving terrace paths, and in spring a daffodil meadow brightens the park. At the end of the main alley is a Second World War cemetery.
Baronų Renių Square
In recent years Baronų Renių Square has been created in the park to recall the manor's history. At its centre stands an authentic 19th-century manor well, built of stones without binding material; it was found while removing Soviet-period structures and then restored.
The square also displays fragments of the manor fence's stone masonry and a cast-iron fence section with the Rönne family coat of arms. These details help visitors read the park not only as a green space but as a trace of a former estate environment.
How to Visit Gargždai Manor Park
The park is open, public, and free, so it can be visited at any time. A walk through the alleys, terraces, and down toward the Minija usually takes 1-1.5 hours; the Baronų Renių Square and manor well are worth including.
Gargždai Area Museum stands nearby, so the park and museum combine naturally. Check the museum's current opening hours on its official page before travelling; the park itself is visited independently.
