Aulaukis Lake: a city lake bordered by Giruliai Forest

Aulaukis Lake lies on the edge of Giruliai Forest beside Klaipėda's northern residential districts. Its several historical names tell a local story, while clearly public approaches should be treated as a cautious short stop rather than a developed beach.

A city lake beside Giruliai Forest

Aulaukis Lake lies in northern Klaipėda between Liepojos Road, residential districts, and Giruliai Forest. Its appeal is not a single monument but the whole meeting of open water, reeds, and woodland edge.

A 2013-2014 municipal project created access points to the water, but official sources do not confirm their current condition or a continuous route around the lake. Plan only a short stop from a clearly public approach.

Aulaukis, Žvejonė, and Mumlaukis

Municipal place-name research recognizes two authentic names: Žvejonė and Aulaukis Lake. Žvejonė was reconstructed from Swiane on old German maps, while Aulaukis is linked to a former settlement and manor.

Mumlaukis remained widespread in everyday speech and appeared in earlier municipal projects. After several years of discussion, the larger body of water received the name Aulaukis Lake; the smaller lake inside military grounds remained unnamed.

A restored shore and sensitive ecology

A 2013-2014 improvement project removed silt, cleared parts of the shore, replanted vegetation, and added access points, benches, and bins. The municipality reported improvement in some water-quality indicators after the work.

The same account noted that dredging temporarily disturbed the ecosystem and that surrounding urban growth continues to exert pressure. Avoid pushing through reeds, feeding waterbirds, or leaving food and fishing waste.

Planning a responsible visit

The coordinates mark the lake itself, not a specific driveway, parking place, or entrance. Use only a clearly public approach, do not cross closed land, and do not attempt to follow shore sections without a path.

Official sources do not present Aulaukis Lake as a developed Klaipėda beach. Do not expect the lifeguards or facilities found at the city's coastal beaches, and check current municipal information before any contact with the water.
