Vištytis Windmill: cap windmill on Ilgasis Hill

Vištytis Windmill stands on Ilgasis Hill, by the town and lake of Vištytis, in Vištytis Regional Park, in the borderland near Kaliningrad Region and Poland. It is a wooden cap windmill: only the upper part with the sails turns toward the wind. It is sometimes also described as a Dutch-type windmill.

The windmill's key value is that all of its authentic technological equipment has survived, making it the only such windmill in Lithuania. Do not confuse it with other Vištytis attractions such as the regional park, lake, or Vištytis Stone; it is a distinct object with its own story.

Built in 1925: history of Kanapkis mill

The windmill was built in 1925 at the junction of three roads by Vištytis resident Jonas Kanapkis, which is why locals also called it Kanapkis mill. The construction date is confirmed by the encyclopedia. The sails caught the wind for about three decades; later, during the Soviet period, the sails were removed and the mill was powered by an engine.

An ethnographic museum opened in the mill in 1978 and operated until 1992, when the exhibits were transferred to the Vilkaviškis Regional Museum and the windmill was returned to the owner's heirs. In 2003 the unique mill, with its technological equipment and miller's house, was entered in the Cultural Heritage Register. The nearby 1928 oil mill is a separate heritage object.

Restoration and present use

In 2018 Vilkaviškis District Municipality purchased the windmill from the heirs, and restoration began in 2019. The foundations, walls, and roof were reinforced, the cap was repaired, the sails and weather vane were reconstructed from iconographic evidence, and the technological equipment was restored. The work was completed in 2019, and the windmill was ceremonially opened on July 16, 2020.

Today the windmill is maintained by the Vištytis Regional Park Directorate and adapted for visitors as a small museum and viewing tower. Inside, you can see old grain-milling equipment, large wooden mechanisms, and millstones; from the top there are views of Vištytis town and the hilly Suvalkija landscape. There is no cafe or guesthouse inside the mill.

Visiting

Entry to the windmill is by prior arrangement: contact the Vištytis Regional Park visitor centre and agree on a visiting time. It is not an object that is open continuously. Check the official park page for current hours, prices, and contacts, because they may change.

A visit usually takes 30-45 minutes. The best season is late spring to autumn, as with the regional park itself. It is easy to combine the windmill with Lake Vištytis, Vištytis Stone, and the park's viewpoints.
