Teofilis Tilvytis Memorial Museum
A Poet's Memorial That Became a Regional Museum
Tauragnai Regional Museum is a branch of the Utena Regional Museum in the small town of Tauragnai, near Lithuania's deepest lake, Tauragnas. The museum was founded in 1971 as a memorial museum for poet Teofilis Tilvytis and around 2000 was reorganized into a wider local-history museum.
It is a small rural museum, but the setting gives it real value for travellers. Lake Tauragnas and Taurapilis Hillfort are close by, so the museum works well as the first stop on a route through this part of Aukštaitija.
Teofilis Tilvytis and the Museum's Origins
Teofilis Tilvytis (1904-1969) was born near Tauragnai, in Gaidžiai village. He began as a satirical writer and later, during the Soviet period, became one of the regime's best-known poets; in 1951 he received the USSR State Prize. The first branch of the Utena Regional Museum was opened here in 1971 to commemorate him.
It is worth keeping the local literary geography clear: poet Antanas Miškinis has a separate museum at the Miškinis brothers' homestead in Juknėnai. Tauragnai Museum is specifically connected with Tilvytis, even though both sites belong to the same Utena museum network.
The Exhibition: Tauragnai from 1261
The current exhibition introduces the Tauragnai area's past from 1261 to the restoration of Lithuanian independence in 1990. It presents notable local figures in culture and art, deportees, and freedom fighters.
Educational programmes also introduce visitors to the life and legacy of herbalist and scientist Eugenija Šimkūnaitė, who came from this region. The local school bears her name.
Lake Tauragnas and Taurapilis
Beside the museum lies Lake Tauragnas, the deepest lake in Lithuania, with a maximum depth of 62.5 m. It is a glacial-rinne lake fed by springs, which helps keep its water level stable.
About 3.5 km away, on the southern shore, stands Taurapilis Hillfort. Nearby archaeologists investigated a rich fifth- to sixth-century warrior burial often called the prince's grave. The museum, lake, and hillfort are therefore easy to combine in one compact route.
Visiting
At the time of research, the museum was open Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00-16:00, and the last working day of the month was a cleaning day. Because this is a small rural branch, it is wise to call before travelling, especially with a group.
Allow about 30-45 minutes for the exhibition. The visit makes most sense when combined with Lake Tauragnas, Taurapilis Hillfort, and other Utena District places.
