A swaying bridge over the Šventoji River

Šventoji Monkey Bridge is one of those places visitors remember less for grand architecture than for the physical experience. As you walk along the narrow suspension bridge over the Šventoji River, it moves slightly underfoot, turning the crossing into a small resort adventure.

The bridge stands in the northwestern part of Šventoji, at the end of central Kopų Street, and links the riverbank with the side of the holiday and health institutions. It is often called a symbol of Šventoji - not a major museum object, but a place that works very well as a walking-route stop between the river, the harbour, and the seaside paths.

The Šventoji River and the resort

The Šventoji beside which the bridge stands is a river of the Baltic Sea basin, flowing through the districts of Skuodas and Kretinga and Palanga City Municipality; for as much as 31.8 km it forms the Lithuania-Latvia border, and it reaches the sea precisely at Šventoji. This is an entirely different river from the Šventoji that is a tributary of the Neris in eastern Lithuania.

Šventoji itself is an old fishing settlement at the river mouth, in the northern part of Palanga City Municipality, about 12 km from the centre of Palanga. In 1970 it was attached to Palanga, and in 2011 the Šventoji port was opened, so the bridge is only one detail of this resort and fishing area.

A modern resort landmark

It is important to be honest: the bridge is a modern local object and has no separate entry in the Register of Cultural Property or the Universal Lithuanian Encyclopedia. Various local accounts state that the suspension bridge was built in 1973 and is about 30 m long, but these are facts of resort memory rather than heritage protection.

The name "Monkey Bridge" is not zoological - it comes from people's experience. The bridge moves, asks you to hold the railings, and playfully makes the body react to every step; there is more than one such suspension bridge in Lithuania.

How to cross safely

The bridge is an outdoor object, so there is no ticket or opening time. Even so, the weather matters: in strong wind, rain, ice, or a very heavy flow of people, crossing may be unpleasant or unsafe.

With children, hold the railings, do not run, and do not jump. This matters because the bridge's appeal comes from its sway, but the same sway can become risky if people behave carelessly.

What to combine in Šventoji

The Monkey Bridge is worth combining with the Šventoji River mouth, the harbour area, Žemaičių Alkas, and a walk toward the sea. It is a short stop, so it works best as one point in a wider Šventoji route.

For photographs, choose a calm morning or evening when fewer people are around the bridge. In midsummer it can be busy, so come outside peak hours if you want a quieter experience.
