Lakštingalų slėnis: a recreation area in an Akmena bend
Lakštingalų slėnis is a spacious woodland recreation area in a scenic bend of the Akmena River, inside Pagramantis Regional Park. It is worth locating it correctly: this is not in Tauragė city, but in Alijošiškės village, about 12 km northwest of Tauragė, and it is by the Akmena, not the Jūra River.
It is one of the best-loved places in the park and is sometimes called its calling card, because the park's circular nature trail begins here. The site sits comfortably between the river bend and the outcrop rising on the opposite bank.
The recreation area and its setting
The recreation area covers about 2.9 ha. It has a small pond with a little island, a children's playground with swings, shelters, benches, a small building, and a modest outdoor stage. Part of the space is adapted for visitors with mobility impairments.
The recreation site is thought to have been laid out as early as 1969 and has long been used for celebrations and informal gatherings; because that date appears mainly in popular sources, it should be mentioned carefully. Various cultural events from Tauragė and Šilalė districts take place here each year. On weekdays it can be quiet; on summer weekends it is livelier.
The Akmena nature trail
The circular Akmena nature trail begins and ends at Lakštingalų slėnis. Sources give slightly different lengths: about 1 km, from 0.9 to roughly 1.2 km. Walking it takes about an hour. The trail is known for two suspension bridges over the Akmena, one near the start and another near the end.
The route follows riverside meadows and forest tracks, then climbs long wooden stairs to a high river slope with an outcrop and a view back toward the valley. Information boards and resting spots are placed along the way.
Pagramantis Regional Park
Lakštingalų slėnis is part of Pagramantis Regional Park, established in 1992. The park covers about 13,500 ha and protects the valleys and forests around the Akmena and Jūra confluence, Plynoji bog, and the region's cultural heritage, including a chain of hillforts along the rivers.
The park visitor centre operates in Ringių village. Nearby, by the Akmena and Jūra confluence, a new viewing tower with a long bridge over the valley has recently been built, making it a natural companion stop to Lakštingalų slėnis.
Visiting
The recreation area and trail are open, free, and visitable year-round; no ticket or registration is needed. Visitors arrive by car to the parking area near Liepų Street in Alijošiškės. The trail itself is for walking and includes fairly steep stairs.
About an hour is enough for the trail, longer if you plan to rest. The best time is late spring and summer, when the valley looks its best and the suspension bridges are most pleasant to cross. The site combines easily with Pagramantis town and other Tauragė-region places.
