A suspension bridge across the Minija at Lankupiai
Lankupiai Suspension Bridge is a short but memorable stop by the Minija. It connects the two sides of the river and, at the same time, the lands of two municipalities - Klaipėda District and Šilutė District.
Official Klaipėda District data give the bridge as 130 m long and 1.4 m wide. It is a metal, plank-covered structure, so while crossing you can feel the light movement typical of suspension bridges.
Lithuania's longest suspension bridge
The Klaipėda District description says that in 2017 the bridge was included in Lithuania's record list as the longest suspension bridge. That fact explains why the place attracts not only locals but also travellers looking for unusual stops.
Still, the bridge is valuable for more than its number. It lets you physically sense the width of the Minija, the flat Pamarys landscape, and the scale of a waterland. It is more an experience place than a classic monument.
The Minija and the start of the King Wilhelm Canal
The Minija is a 202 km river (basin area 2,942 km2) flowing from the Samogitian Highland into the Nemunas Delta; below Priekulė it enters a very low delta plain and joins the Atmata, one of the branches of the Nemunas. At Lankupiai the channel widens to about 20-45 m, and below that to 50-65 m; the depth below Lankupiai reaches up to 4 m.
It is exactly at Lankupiai, about 18 km from the Minija's mouth, that the King Wilhelm (Klaipėda) Canal branches off the river. So the bridge stands not in a merely scenic spot but at a water-route junction, next to Lankupiai Lock and the historic start of the canal.
How to visit safely
The bridge is an outdoor object and is visited without a ticket. Choose a dry, calm day, and avoid ice, flood risk, or strong wind, when the narrow bridge can feel uncomfortable or unsafe.
When crossing, hold the railings, do not jump, do not crowd the bridge, and judge the bridge condition on site. This is especially important when travelling with children or people who dislike moving structures.
Lankupiai in one stop
Lankupiai Suspension Bridge pairs logically with Lankupiai Lock. One object shows a pedestrian crossing over the Minija, while the other shows the navigation and water-level-management history of the King Wilhelm Canal.
Neither place needs much time, but together they create a clear fragment of the Pamarys engineering landscape. It is a good short stop when driving between Priekulė, Dreverna, Kintai, or Šilutė.
