Klaipėda University Botanical Garden: nature at the city's edge

Klaipėda University Botanical Garden is a calm place in northern Klaipėda, where the city opens into the natural setting of the Danė/Dangė River valley. The official garden page states that it was founded in 1993 and covers 9.3 ha.

The garden works both for a walk and for more focused plant learning. Its areas include dendrology, ornamental herbaceous plants, medicinal and aromatic plants, climbing plants, Eastern gardens, and Lithuanian flora displays.

The Danė valley and the nearness of the sea

The official Klaipėda University page emphasizes the geographical context: the garden is in western Lithuania, in the northern part of Klaipėda city, in the Danė River valley, about 3.5 km from the Baltic Sea. This matters because the coastal climate, winds, and river valley shape the plant environment.

For visitors, this means the botanical garden is not just a decorative city park. It lets you see plant collections more naturally absorbed into the valley, the shade of old trees, the nearness of the river, and the damper coastal air typical of Klaipėda.

Dendrological park and climate-change network

In 2002, Klaipėda University Botanical Garden was granted dendrological park status. That draws attention to trees and woody plant collections, which here are not merely background but one of the garden's main layers.

The official page also states that since 2020 the garden has been a member of the Botanic Gardens Climate Change Alliance. The place is therefore useful not only for a walk but also for understanding how botanical gardens take part in research, education, and plant conservation.

Tauralaukis manor park and Prussian traces

The KU Botanical Garden introduction states that the territory is part of the former Tauralaukis manor park on the right bank of the Danė/Dangė River, below Tauralaukis Bridge, 3-14 m above sea level. Objects recalling Prussian history survive here: an old cemetery, oak trees, and defensive ramparts, while many oaks, maples, and ashes grow naturally. The story also mentions the legendary tradition of Queen Louise's walks.

Fragments of the old cemetery remain in the middle of the garden. The official page states that members of the Klaipėda Freemasons' lodge Memphis are buried there: Baron Karolis Henrikas Gustavas von Mirbach (1741-1800) and Count Ernstas Johanas Henrikas Karolis von Mirbach (1763-1819). Other cemetery attributes, such as spikes from epitaph plaques, have also been collected there. This gives the garden a historical as well as botanical layer.
