Alytus Regional Museum
Alytus Regional Museum stands on Savanorių Street in Alytus and is regarded as the main and largest museum of Dzūkija and all southern Lithuania. According to VLE, it held more than 124,000 exhibits in 2023, and its branches tell the history and culture of the wider region.
The collections are broad: archaeological finds, the oldest being Mesolithic flint artefacts; numismatics with several coin hoards; old photographs; written material; ethnography; applied and folk art. One of Lithuania's richest collections of fourteenth- to seventeenth-century earrings is especially notable.
From Dzūkai Museum to today
The museum was officially registered in 1928, created by local enthusiasts under difficult conditions. In 1935 it was attached to the Dzūkai Regional Studies Society and named the Dzūkai Museum. During the Second World War the museum lost almost all exhibits, so it was restored in 1946 and renamed Alytus Regional Museum in 1947.
After 1957 the collections grew quickly, and archaeological expeditions began, studying burial grounds and hillforts in surrounding districts, including Alytus Hillfort. In 1991 two memorial museums became branches, expanding the institution beyond regional studies alone.
Memorial branches and exhibitions
The museum includes two poets' memorial museums. The Anzelmas Matutis Memorial Museum is in the house where the children's poet lived, preserving his study, library, and personal items. The Antanas Jonynas Memorial Museum operates in the poet's childhood home and is regarded as one of the first museums opened in Lithuania after March 11.
The main building has history and archaeology exhibitions, including an archaeological exhibition on the region's prehistory. The museum also runs educational activities, making it suitable for families and students.
Visiting and tickets
During research, the official page listed the main museum as open Monday-Friday 9:00-18:00 and Saturday 10:00-16:00, closed Sunday; branch hours differed. A standard ticket cost 1 EUR, concession 0.50 EUR, and both memorial branches were free.
Because opening hours and prices change, check the official museum page before travelling. The main building usually takes 1-1.5 hours; add more time for the memorial museums. The museum combines well with Alytus Hillfort and other city and Dzūkija sites.
