Tauro District Partisans and Deportation Museum

The Tauro District Partisans and Deportation Museum is on Vytauto Street in Marijampolė and is considered one of the first museums of this type in Lithuania. It tells the story of armed resistance to Soviet occupation in Suvalkija and of the deportation of residents; the museum is a branch of the Marijampolė Regional and President Kazys Grinius Museum.

The museum was founded on the initiative of Marijampolė political prisoners and deportees. It was opened and blessed on November 21, 1993, and the main creator and long-time head was the partisan liaison Aldona Sabaitytė-Vilutienė. Some sources give 1992, but that date is inaccurate: the museum opened in 1993.

The history of Tauro District

Tauro District was a Lithuanian partisan military district that fought the Soviet occupation regime in Suvalkija in 1945-1952 and was one of the first in Lithuania. According to VLE, the district headquarters was formed in Skardupiai in July 1945, and the district itself was established on August 15, 1945; its founders included the priest Antanas Ylius.

The district's activity covered Marijampolė, Šakiai, Vilkaviškis, Lazdijai, and surrounding areas up to the Nemunas. Its units included the Vytautas, Žalgiris, and Geležinis Vilkas detachments. The museum presents this history through documents, photographs, and images of partisan commanders.

Exhibition and reconstructed rooms

The museum has two main exhibitions: one about armed partisan resistance in 1945-1952 and one about deportations, prisons, and camps. It displays Russian and German weapons, archival documents, copies of district protocols, partisan uniforms, a reconstructed district flag, personal belongings, and finds from reburials of partisan remains.

The most forceful part of the exhibition is the reconstructed fragment of an NKVD and KGB interrogator's office and a prison cell. These rooms help visitors feel the atmosphere of repression, so the museum functions not only as a history display but also as a place of memory and civic education.

Visiting and tickets

During research, the official page listed opening hours as Tuesday-Saturday 9:00-18:00 and the last Sunday of the month 11:00-16:00; on the last working day of the month the museum was closed for maintenance. The adult ticket was 2 EUR, the discounted ticket 1 EUR, and admission was free on the last Sunday of the month.

Because opening hours and prices change, check the official page before travelling. About an hour is usually enough for a visit. The museum combines well with Marijampolė Basilica, other city sites, and Skardupiai, where Tauro District was founded.
