Poetry Park
Poetry Park at the Šešupė and Jevonis confluence
Marijampolė Poetry Park is in the city centre, at the confluence of the Šešupė and Jevonis rivers. Because of this setting, it is not just a green strip between streets: water, riverbanks, and paths shape the main experience, while the confluence becomes the park's natural core.
Before the Second World War, this land belonged to the Marian Fathers, the religious order that gave the city its name. Work on the present park began in 1984, so the space combines older urban memory with a Soviet-period layer of city planning.
Why it is called Poetry Park
The name is linked with the Poezijos pavasaris, or Poetry Spring, event held in Marijampolė in 1986. That matters because the park was understood from the beginning not only as a recreational place but also as a cultural space in the city centre.
The name still works today. Walks, events, amphitheatre programmes, sculptures, and city festivals all fit naturally here. It is not a narrow literary memorial but a cultural leisure park whose identity is shaped by the word poetry.
2012 reconstruction, fountains, and plantings
After the 2012 reconstruction, the view of the Šešupė channel was opened, fountains, lighting, and more comfortable paths were installed. Municipal tree-inventory information gives the park's area as about 4.36 ha and notes a rich variety of tree and shrub species.
For visitors, sculptural accents, children's play areas, and the amphitheatre are important features. The park works for a short stop, but in the evening, with lighting and water accents, it becomes more memorable and is at its best for photography.
Events and park life
Poetry Park is one of Marijampolė's main event spaces. City festivals, concerts, and poetry evenings are held in the amphitheatre and on open lawns, so the park's mood depends strongly on the season and programme.
Because the park lies beside the Šešupė and Jevonis, it is often included in longer riverside walking routes. Check whether an event is taking place on your visit day, because it can change the normal rhythm of the park.
Practical visiting
The park is an open city space, so there is no ordinary ticket. Event arrangements, fountain operation, path repairs, or winter maintenance can change, however, so check current information before a special trip.
Thirty minutes is enough for a short walk, while children, photography, or evening fountains can make it worth planning up to an hour and a half. The park is easy to combine with the Marijampolė Sugar Factory heritage and a route through the city centre.
