Suvalkija: fertile Užnemunė

Suvalkija lies in south-western Lithuania, on the left bank of the Nemunas, which is why it is also called Užnemunė, the land beyond the Nemunas. It is a region of plains and Lithuania's most fertile soils, where agriculture prospered. That prosperity shaped the image of tidy, well-off farmsteads and thrifty farmers. In the south-west the region reaches the borders with Poland and the Kaliningrad Region near Lake Vištytis.

The region includes Marijampolė County, with Marijampolė, Vilkaviškis, Šakiai, Kalvarija, and Kazlų Rūda, as well as the Prienai area. The main centres are Marijampolė, Vilkaviškis, and Šakiai, while historic Zanavykija centres around Šakiai and Kudirkos Naumiestis. The name Suvalkija comes from the nineteenth-century Suwałki Governorate, while the older name Sūduva recalls the Sudovians, or Yotvingians, who once lived here.

Kapsai, Zanavykai, and the dialect

People in Suvalkija speak the western Aukštaitian dialect, with two prominent groups: Kapsai around Marijampolė and Vilkaviškis, and Zanavykai around Šakiai and Kudirkos Naumiestis. The name Kapsai is linked with the word kap, meaning kaip, or 'how', while Zanavykai refers to people living beyond the Nuovė, or Nova, stream.

The western Aukštaitian Kaunas subdialect became an important base for standard Lithuanian, so Suvalkija's speech is close to the modern written language. Regional identity also values thrift, diligence, and independence, nourished by early peasant freedom and relative prosperity.

History: early freedom and the national revival

After the Napoleonic Wars, Užnemunė belonged to the Duchy of Warsaw and later to the Kingdom of Poland within the Russian Empire. Serfdom was abolished here much earlier than in the rest of Lithuania, in 1807. This helped peasants become wealthier, educate their children, and become a driving force in the late nineteenth-century national revival.

Many Lithuanian national awakeners came from Suvalkija. Vincas Kudirka, author of Tautiška giesmė, Lithuania's national anthem, was born here, as were many signatories of the Act of February 16, 1918 and builders of the interwar state. Manor culture and strong farming communities shaped the region's towns and villages.

Skilandis, manors, and living traditions

Suvalkija's cuisine reflects a prosperous farming region. The best-known food is skilandis, a smoked meat product traditionally made in a pig's stomach, along with homemade sausages, smoked meats, potato dishes, and bread. Festive tables often carry rich, substantial foods that reflect the region's agricultural abundance.

Manor heritage, Classicist architecture, and the tradition of orderly farmsteads are important cultural signs. Calendar customs, songs, and crafts remain alive, while Zanavykai and regional museums preserve local distinctiveness. Traditional-food and seasonal-custom pages give broader context.

What to see: manors, towns, and nature

Manor lovers should visit Paežeriai Manor near Vilkaviškis, with its Classicist palace and park, and Zypliai Manor in Šakiai District, one of the largest regional ensembles. Urban heritage appears in Marijampolė's Basilica of St Michael the Archangel, Vilkaviškis Cathedral, and the Marijampolė Regional Museum.

For national-revival history, visit the Vincas Kudirka Museum in Kudirkos Naumiestis and the Zanavykai Museum. Nature routes lead to Lake Vištytis by the Polish border, Žuvintas Biosphere Reserve, and Kazlų Rūda forests. The places-to-visit stream below gathers the full regional list.

Practical tips for travellers

Suvalkija is compact and easy to reach. The main Vilnius-Kaunas-Marijampolė-Suwałki route passes through it, so the region can be visited even on the way to Poland. A car is easiest for manor and museum routes, and the trip pairs well with Kaunas or Vištytis nature.

Many manors and museums work seasonally or by prior arrangement, so book tours in advance. In the protected areas around Vištytis and Žuvintas, follow visiting rules. Regional homesteads and inns are good places to try local skilandis and homemade meat products.
